News from Camp Walden in Denmark, ME!

“Camp Walden will be celebrating our 110th season this summer. In 1916, two determined young women from New York traveled to Denmark, Maine, to purchase property for a girls’ summer camp. Their dream and determination laid the foundation for what Camp Walden is today. They believed that if individuals had solid support and encouragement from a circle of friends, they could accomplish anything. The traditions of honesty, believing in oneself, respecting others and not accepting failure became, and continues to be, the essential elements of Walden’s philosophy.

The tradition of attending Camp Walden continues from one generation to the next. For 110 years Walden has been a meaningful part of the lives of hundreds of campers and staff. This summer we will celebrate this continued success and dream of our founders.”

Thank you, Kathy Jonas (Director of Camp Walden for over 15 years), for sending us this exciting milestone news! Learn more about Camp Walden’s 110 years of history HERE.

Camp Caribou’s Al Lerman turns 100!

The Camp Caribou family celebrated a huge milestone last week; Albert ‘Al’ Lerman celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by his family, including his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, as well as friends and Camp Caribou alumni who flew in from far and wide to take part in the birthday fun.

Al Lerman and his late wife, Evelyn, bought Camp Caribou back in 1968, 45 years after Camp Caribou (back then called Camp Winslow) was established in 1923. Camp Caribou is now on its third generation of Lerman family ownership/ directorship and celebrated their 100th year of operation in 2022. Second generation owners/ directors Bill and Martha actually first met and fell in love at the New England Camp Conference! Learn more about the Lerman Family story here.

Congratulations to all the Lerman’s on this incredible milestone! Happy 100th Birthday, Al, from all of us at ACA, New England.

Celebrating 50 Years on the Appalachian Trail

Alford Lake Camp is celebrating an incredible milestone later this summer – the 50th anniversary of their annual Appalachian Mountain Trip (AMT) 7-week summer trek which started back in 1975. A select group of campers (graduated 9th graders) along with 2 leaders spend seven weeks straight braving all 300+ miles of the Maine section of the Appalachian Trail.

This invitation-only trip is strenuous, challenging, and immensely rewarding adventure. Over the past 49 years, 373 campers and around 90 leaders have completed the AMT. The 50th year will no doubt welcome around a dozen more names to that accomplished list of hikers. We will share future announcements surrounding AMT “L” (AMT 50) including the anniversary celebrations with past Alford Lake Camp alumni and summiters this coming August.
