Spring Update from the Board DEI Committee

May 14, 2021

Dear Friends,

This year the ACA, New England Board created a DEI committee as part of our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.

As an association, we have begun three initiatives to work toward our goals of understanding and diversifying our membership and facilitating in a transparent process of self-reflection.

  1. Member Survey – Thanks to those of you who participated in our DEI survey. We are actively reviewing your responses and will use your input to help guide our next steps as a committee.
  2. Conference Outreach – In an effort to share a taste of what we do, we invited camps and youth serving organizations working with communities of color, who are not yet ACA, New England members, to attend the Northeast conference. The board sponsored 26 people who took advantage of the opportunity to attend the conference.
  3. DEI Workshop – The Board and ACA, New England professional staff took part in the first of a series of workshops facilitated by Stephen Spaloss, Chief Equity Office at City Year Inc., to help us create a common language and understanding around Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, so that we can continue to pursue the goals of this work together.

This is just the beginning of our work. Each of us looks forward to continuing to work toward a more just world through our camp programs this summer, and then again when we reconvene together as a Board in the fall.

We know there is a great deal on everyone’s minds as we head into a summer with unique and daunting challenges. As a Board, we ask you to pause and create one goal for your camp program in the area Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. Start small or start big, the choice is yours, but we encourage you to make a commitment to do something. If you need support, please reach out to ACA, New England – the staff can be a resource or connect you with a consultant in this area of expertise.

What will your goal be?  Together, we can begin to make a difference. We hope you’ll join us.

Warmly,

Cat Logan Sangster & Doug Sutherland
