Register for four e-sessions\, and email Kerry to get a fifth session for free (you can use this all for yourself or mix and match staff from your camp \nArticles Discussion: Dr. Robert Brooks’ writings on resilience\, tenacity\, optimism and positive relationships\nDr. Robert Brooks is a clinical psychologist and leading author on the themes of resilience\, motivation\, and tenacity – all topics related to youth development and social emotional learning\, cornerstones of most summer camp experiences. He has written numerous books\, including Raising Resilient Children and Tenacity in Children. These books are great reads\, but we know your time is limited. So\, Dr. Brooks has cultivated five of his articles exploring these ideas for us to read and discuss\, along with an article that he was interviewed for that appeared in CampBusiness. To view and download the articles\, click HERE. Dr. Brooks won’t be on this discussion session with us\, but will join us on May 16 for a presentation\, The Camp Experience: A Source of Resilience for Children and Teens\, that dives into some of the topics covered in these articles. \nWe’ll use the following questions to frame our discussion: \n\nOf all the ideas in the articles\, what do you think camps already do well? Where are areas we can do better?\nGiven the effects of the pandemic over the last couple of years\, do any of these concepts from the articles seem even more important to think about now than before?\nHow are the needs of campers and staff\, as they relate to resiliency\, optimism\, connection\, etc.\, similar? Different?\nWhat can I do to help each camper feel welcome in my presence? How about staff?\nWhat do you want the memories kids have of you to be\, especially as they relate to the concept of resiliency? What will you intentionally say and do so campers will have the memories that you’d like them to have?\n\nKerry Salvo\, Director of Education and Professional Development at ACA\, New England and Jonathan Caflun\, Assistant Director at Camp Wekeela and a member of ACA\, New England’s Education Committee\, and will facilitate this conversation. While Dr. Brooks will not be a part of this discussion group\, you will have the opportunity to pose questions to Kerry and Jonathan that you’d like them to share with Dr. Brooks prior to his his May 16th e-session. \nThen\, join us again from 6:00 – 7:00 pm on Monday\, May 16 for The Camp Experience: A Source of Resilience for Children and Teens when Dr. Brooks will be with us to answer your questions\, highlight factors that strengthen hope\, confidence\, caring\, and resilience in children and teens\, and describe specific\, realistic strategies that camps can apply. Click here for more information and to register. \nRegister for one or both sessions! The May 4 discussion will be live\, discussion-based\, facilitated by ACA\, New England\, and WILL NOT be recorded. \n\n \nAbout the author: Dr. Robert Brooks is a clinical psychologist on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and former Director of the Department of Psychology at McLean Hospital\, a private psychiatric hospital in the Boston area.  He has lectured nationally and internationally to audiences of parents\, educators\, mental health and health care professionals\, and a variety of organizations on topics pertaining to resilience across the lifespan\, family and parenting relationships\, and creating positive school and work environments. He has provided presentations about resilience at conferences sponsored by ACA and ACA-New England. Dr. Brooks has received numerous awards for his work and has served as a consultant to Sesame Street Parents Magazine.  For further information\, please visit Dr. Brooks’ website at www.drrobertbrooks.com.

We will reflect on our own highest aspirations for who we want to be as leaders in the work we do and will take the unusual step of confronting the shadow—the dark side of our aspirations—that we all possess but often refuse to acknowledge. \nFollowing a 90-minute e-workshop focused on engaging with these questions\, we will gather to think through some specific leadership challenges related to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion brought to the session by participants. Together\, we’ll explore how we might address those challenges in ways that align with our mission and avoid our personal shadows. \nThe goals of this session are as follows: \n\nGain a higher consciousness of the interconnected nature of inner and outer change\nAchieve greater clarity regarding our own person leadership mission and shadow\nBuild skills and understanding around how to harness this inner clarity to address real-world challenges\n\nWhen:             Wednesday\, November 18\, 2020\, 10:30 am – 1:30 pm \nProgram will run approximately 10:30 am – 1:00 pm with optional networking from 1:00 pm – 1:30 pm \nWhere:            Online\, via Zoom \nHow Much:     $40/members; $60/non-members \nRegistration Link \nSponsored by:\n \nIf you are joining us for our Navigating Your Financial Path Forward e-seminar on October 21\, save 20% off of your registration fee for this Leading With Purpose e-seminar! \nQuestions? Reach out to Kerry\, ACA New England Director of Education and Professional Development\, at kerry@acanewengland.org or 781-541-6080 ext. 104 \nRegistrations are non-refundable\, but may be transferred to another eligible individual prior to the start of the event. \n Participants will receive 3 Continuing Education Credits (CECs) for their full participation.  \nPlease note: We do not want cost to prohibit a camp professional from joining our event. Should the price of this e-seminar be a barrier\, please reach out to Kerry Salvo\, kerry@acanewengland.org to discuss financial assistance options. \nAbout the Presenter  \nDr. Max Klau is an author\, coach\, speaker\, scholar\, and leadership development consultant living in Boston. SUMMARY:Disability Inclusion During Covid-19 | Strategies for Camp and Recreation Programs
DESCRIPTION:Are you running in-person camp this summer (or already looking beyond this summer) and looking for some support adapting your inclusion principles and strategies? If so\, join us! \nInclusion is NOT Cancelled – join ACA\, New England and Lisa Drennan of MERGE Divers e Abilities Inclusion Consulting for a webinar designed to support your inclusion initiative ensuring that campers with diverse abilities are still engaged and supported in meaningful participation. We’ve taken MERGE’s inclusion principles and strategies\, adapting them to be applied to the challenges of the new health and safety guidelines your camp community is facing. You’ll learn that embracing these strategies will not only be beneficial to children with disabilities\, but also builds a positive camp culture as we recognize that ALL your campers (and staff) may be experiencing effects of the current global pandemic and resulting isolation and uncertainty. Give your team the tools and confidence to successfully support ALL campers this summer\, but especially those with diverse abilities. \nAbout the presenter:  \nLisa Drennan\, Founder of MERGE Diverse Abilities Inclusion Consulting \nLisa has a 35-year career supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to be active and engaged within their community. At New England Village in Pembroke\, MA\, she gained experience in working as a Direct Support Worker and eventually as the Director of The Sollar Wellness Center specifically designed for this population. In 2014\, she joined the South Shore YMCA as the first-ever Association Director of Inclusion\, creating innovative programs and comprehensive staff trainings to build a culture of inclusion.  In 2018 Lisa started her own company\, MERGE Inclusion Consulting where she provides consultation\, staff training and systems implementation to community entities committed to recreation\, sport and social program inclusion. \n*This session will be recorded and shared on the national ACA COVID-19 resource page a few days after the session.* \nEvent Organizer/Sponsor: ACA\, New England \nWhen: June 17\, 2020 from 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm ET (RSVP required) \nWhere: Via Zoom \nCost: FREE\, but registration is required
