DESCRIPTION:Aquatic Risk Management for Camp Pools and Waterfronts\nDr. Rachel Griffiths and Dr. Tom Griffiths of the Aquatic Safety Research Group\, LLC are proud to offer a unique program for ACA members. This 3-hour\, fast paced seminar offers a variety of Proactive Prevention Strategies from numerous sources to make aquatic activities at campgrounds safer and more enjoyable. Suggestions for improved lifeguard surveillance as well as more efficient Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) will be offered. Safer design considerations will also be discussed. Best practices developed through hundreds of inspections of pools and waterfronts around the globe will be presented. The strategies offered will be practical\, effective\, and affordable. \nAbout the Instructors\n \nDr. Rachel Griffiths is the director of research and education for Aquatic Safety Research Group. She is also the President of Note and Float Life Jacket Fund\, which donates life jackets to aquatic facilities implementing the Note & Float program. Rachel conducts research and publishes water safety articles\, teaches Aquatic Risk Management seminars\, and has conducted inspections and written reports for a myriad of aquatic facility audits throughout the country. She is a recipient of the Aquatics International Power 25 Award. Rachel authored the 3rd edition of The Complete Swimming Pool Reference.  She received a Doctorate Degree in Public Health from Loma Linda University \n  \n \nDr. Tom Griffiths is the President and Founder of Aquatic Safety Research Group. Recognized as an international leader in water safety\, he has spent 38 years teaching\, coaching and managing aquatics at three major universities. Griffiths has produced videos\, textbooks\, articles\, and presentations in various areas of aquatics focusing his efforts on safety. He has also conducted hundreds of aquatic facility and beach inspections across the nation and abroad and teaches full day Aquatic Risk Management seminars. Perhaps his most significant contributions are the Five Minute Scanning Strategy©\, Griff’s Guard Stations©\, Disappearing Dummies\, his research on Shallow Water Blackout\, and the National Note & Float program. In 2024\, he released his memoir Dr. Tom’s Lifeguard Chronicles and lifeguard detection app Dr. Tom’s Lifeguard Vision. He has been an aquatic safety expert for more than 40 years and shares his knowledge\, expertise\, and experience worldwide\, including appearances on 60 Minutes Australia\, Inside Edition\, NPR\, and many other TV and radio programs. Participants must attend all learning sessions over the timeframe to successfully become an accreditation volunteer. This course requires active participation and engagement. \nACA’s accreditation program is the only national peer review program of its kind for the camp industry. Being an ACA accreditation volunteer (visitor) provides you with the experience to build your network\, polish your skills in observation and risk management\, and develop mentoring opportunities for both you and the camps you work with. SUMMARY:Youth Suicide Prevention Training
DESCRIPTION:This introductory level offering explores the myths and facts of suicide and how to intervene with youth struggling with suicidal ideation. \nBased on three SAMHSA Nationally Recognized Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) youth suicide prevention programs\, this training uses\, video\, discussion\, and role-play to enable participants to feel comfortable identifying signs and symptoms of youth suicide and how to assist a camper who may be suicidal. \nWho created this course?\nThis course is presented by trainers from the Center for School Behavioral Health at Mental Health America of Greater Houston (the Center) as part of its Emotional Backpack Project. The Center serves as a “living laboratory” for incubating innovative\, cost-effective and replicable best practices to improve the behavioral health of students by: \n\nFacilitating collective action\nProviding highly specialized professional development opportunities\, technical assistance\, and community education\nConducting research\, advocacy\, and policy analysis.\n\n*ACA\, New England offered this program in February 2023. Charles serves as a Senior Professional Development Specialist for the Center for School Behavioral Health at Mental Health America – Greater Houston. SUMMARY:Self-Harm at Camp: Navigating Decision-Making Around Campers and Staff Who Threaten or Engage in Self-Harm (e-session)
DESCRIPTION:Nearly all camps have experienced campers and/or staff who threaten to\, or actually\, engage in self-harm during camp. \nThis e-session\, co-hosted by ACA\, New England & ACA\, New York and New Jersey\, will be led by three experts in the summer camp space: social worker and camp consultant Nick Teich\, and attorneys Isaac Mamaysky and Rachel Fendell Satinsky. \nDuring the web session\, we will dive into the topic of self-harm and how to prepare directors and camp leadership to make decisions such as: \n\nWhen do we need to send campers or staff home?\nHow can we consider what mechanisms we should put in place if they should stay?\nHow can we know what individuals truly mean when they threaten self-harm or make suicidal statements?\nAre we asking enough questions about mental health before camp?\nMost importantly\, how can we keep our campers and staff safe\, get them the care they need\, and ensure that we are abiding by the law?\n\nThe presenters will leave time for questions and answers from participants. \nAbout the presenters:\n \nDr. Nick Teich is the founder and was the longtime director of an overnight camp in New Hampshire. He is now an executive coach for camp directors\, helping them with their camp’s unique needs and goals\, through his business\, Fairwinds Camp Consulting. Nick is on the ACA\, New England Board of Directors and is a 2024 recipient of ACA\, New England’s Peter Kerns Award for the Advancement of Professional. He is a trained social worker and holds a doctorate in social policy. Nick lives in the Boston area. \n \nIsaac Mamaysky is a Partner at Potomac Law Group\, where he started the firm’s Camps and Youth Programs practice. He also writes the Camp Law Blog. In addition to his practice\, Isaac has over a decade of experience as the founder and director of a large ACA-accredited overnight camp in Wayne County\, Pennsylvania. As an active camp operator\, Isaac has firsthand experience with the same types of challenges faced by his clients\, which gives him a unique perspective when addressing their legal needs. Isaac is a frequent speaker on legal matters at American Camp Association conferences and events. He earned a juris doctor cum laude from the Boston University School of Law. He earned a bachelors degree summa cum laude from the University of Rhode Island. \n \nRachel Fendell Satinsky is a seasoned attorney concentrating in employment litigation and counseling. Rachel has successfully represented a range of clients\, from Fortune 50 companies to start-ups\, in federal and state courts and before administrative agencies. She has experience with all aspects of litigation including obtaining successful resolutions on summary judgment\, at trial\, and on appeal. Her litigation and counseling experience spans various industries\, including retail\, financial services\, and healthcare. However\, there are lots more opportunities throughout the year (see the application below). \nThis course is a two part training: AVC PART 1 is a self-paced online pre-course and AVC PART 2 is a live session with trained facilitators. Participants must attend all learning sessions over the timeframe to successfully become an accreditation volunteer. This course requires active participation and engagement. \nACA’s accreditation program is the only national peer review program of its kind for the camp industry. Being an ACA accreditation volunteer (visitor) provides you with the experience to build your network\, polish your skills in observation and risk management\, and develop mentoring opportunities for both you and the camps you work with. The Youth Mental Health First Aid USA curriculum is primarily focused on information participants can use to help adolescents and transition-age youth\, ages 8-18. \nWho should take this course? The course is designed for any adults who regularly interact with adolescents who are ACA\, New England members or who work at camps located in Western Massachusetts. *We are able to provide this course free of charge to ACA\, New England members thanks to a SAMHSA grant.* \nWho created the course? Who created the course? The National Council for Mental Wellbeing was instrumental in bringing Mental Health First Aid to the U.S. Mental Health First Aid USA worked with experts at the National Technical Assistance Center for Children’s Mental Health at the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development to develop the youth program. \nMental Health First Aid Instructors through Mental Health First Aid:  \n\nKayla Crowe\nJoanne Dreher\n\nThis course is FREE for ACA\, New England members and folks who work at camps in Western Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION:Abuse allegations can and do happen everywhere and camps need to be prepared. \nJoin us for a day of learning as insurance specialists Katie Johnson and Meredith Bunnel from the Redwoods Group and public relations expert Janet Prensky of Aigner/Prensky Marketing Group explore: \n\nExploring what is abuse and how the landscape has changed over the past 20 years;\nLooking at statue of limitation laws and what that means for camps;\nEstablishing proactive prevention strategies (from supervision to HR and personnel policies);\nLearnings from abuse-related insurance claims;\nResponding to allegations against your camp – including historical or current; and\nUtilizing communication and PR tactics to protect your brand.\n\nThis program is designed for camp staff and board members in leadership roles who influence camp policies and procedures and want to gain a better understanding of this topic. \nCheck-in will start at 9:30 am\, with the program kicking off at 10:00 am. \nLunch will be provided and you will earn 5 CECs for your participation in the seminar. \nAbout Our Presenters: \nMeredith Bunnel\, JD\, MPP\, Director of Consulting\, The Redwoods Group \nMeredith has 15+ years of youth protection and advocacy experience\, and is currently the Director of Consulting for The Redwoods Group\, managing the team of consultants working nationwide to reduce risk and enhance the culture of safety in youth and community serving organizations. Prior to joining Redwoods\, Meredith practiced law\, specializing in domestic violence and child abuse prosecution before serving as court-appointed counsel representing youth and families in the juvenile justice and foster care systems. SUMMARY:Youth Mental Health First Aid
DESCRIPTION:Youth Mental Health First Aid (pre-work and live virtual course)\nTHIS COURSE IS FULL AND HAS REACHED CAPACITY\nTo be added to the WAITLIST for this course or other upcoming YMHFA courses organized by ACA\, New England\, complete THIS FORM.\n\nThis is an 8-hour education program that introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents\, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention\, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Youth Mental Health First Aid uses group activity\, role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional\, peer\, social\, and self-help care. \nThis course is offered in a two-part format and both components must be completed to earn your certification: \n\n5 hours of pre-work must be completed by Friday\, January 22\n5 hour live\, virtual course from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm on Monday\, February 1\n\nWhat will participants learn? This course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents\, including anxiety\, depression\, psychosis\, eating disorders\, AD/HD\, disruptive behavior disorders\, and substance use disorder. \nParticipants do not learn to diagnose\, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling – rather\, participants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan. The Youth Mental Health First Aid USA curriculum is primarily focused on information participants can use to help adolescents and transition-age youth\, ages 8-18. \nWho should take this course? The course is designed for any adults who regularly interact with adolescents who are ACA\, New England members. \nWho created the course? The National Council for Behavioral Health was instrumental in bringing Mental Health First Aid to the U.S. Mental Health First Aid USA worked with experts at the National Technical Assistance Center for Children’s Mental Health at the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development to develop the youth program. \nInstructors:  \nKarl Blumel\, Residence Education Coordinator for Selection\, Training\, and Leadership\, University of Massachusetts Amherst \nRosie McMahan\, Program Manager\, Mass Mentoring Partnership & Counselor/Educator\, Optimistic Options \nWhen: Monday\, February 1\, 2021\, 10:00 am – 3:30 pm (pre-work must be completed by Friday\, January 22 for participants to receive log-in information for the live portion of the course). \nWhere: Virtually \nCost: FREE for ACA\, New England members.
