SUMMARY:Resource Community Series: Operationalizing DEI at Your Camp
DESCRIPTION:Has your camp been talking about or been doing preliminary work around belonging\, diversity\, inclusion (and similar concepts that may go by a variety of terms)?\nAre you ready to take this work to the next level? If so\, join ACA\, New England and OAAARS for a year-long exploration into how to more deeply operationalize DEIB at your camp. This Resource Community will be a cohort model with monthly meetings from October to May. \nSimone Gamble and their colleagues from OAAARS will ask you to identify a specific project to work on and using accountable structure and intersectional lens\, they will guide you through a year of reflection and action. \nThis series is designed to be an interactive\, live\, discussion-based opportunity for you to grow your camp’s skills in this area while being guided by strong facilitators. This is a 201\, intermediate-level offering.  \nThe series will consist of two in-person sessions\, 6 Zoom sessions\, one informal in-person meet-up at the New England Camp Conference\, and a presentation opportunity during an e-session hosted by ACANE in early May. MESH(+) Seal programs consciously incorporate practices and strategies that enhance mental health\, emotional resilience\, social development\, and overall well-being in meaningful ways. \nMESH (+) is a framework that strives to create intentional communities by integrating mental\, emotional and social health into the personal and collective camp experiences. DESCRIPTION:CampWell Level 2* Training\nCreating a culture of wellbeing at camp \n(Participation in Level 1 training IS NOT required for you to join Level 2) \n \n  \nThe CampWell training program aims to help all be well at camp and seeks to create consistent care across the spectrum of all summer learning spaces. Made by camp people\, for camp\, people\, CampWell is an interactive\, experiential\, multi-day training program that equips camp leaders to build a culture of well-being across every layer of their community. It is designed to help program directors and leaders identify\, understand\, cultivate\, and create a community of well-being at camp by shaping trainings and programs that incorporate the tools\, self-awareness\, and understanding needed to enhance the experience and safety for all. CampWell delivers immersive learning\, actionable tools\, and a multi-tiered framework that strengthens individual\, communal\, and organizational wellness. The course is a collaboration between the Alliance for Camp Health (ACH) and American Camp Association\, New England. Registration information and additional details are below. \nTo see the course outline\, CLICK HERE. \nUpon completion of the course\, participants will have the content and resources necessary to incorporate CampWell into future staff trainings. Participants earn a CampWell Certification and receive four essential resources to level up staff training: the CampWell Level Two Curriculum (narrative form)\, CampWell Roadmap of cited sources\, CampWell slide deck\, and the ACH MESH (+) Resource Guide — a $200 value\, all included with registration. \nWhen ACA\, New England offered this training in March 2024 it quickly reached capacity! This September 2025 offering may be the only time the training is offered in the region prior to summer 2026\, so don’t wait too long to register! \nThe CampWell project definition for wellbeing at camp: Wellbeing is characterized by physical\, mental\, social\, emotional\, environmental and/or spiritual health\, at the individual and organizational level. When all are well\, they participate fully and contribute in the ways they choose because they are safe\, supported\, and connected. \nThe full CampWell training will include a pre-conference Zoom session and two days of in-person sessions at Camp Wingate*Kirkland in Yarmouth Port\, MA. \nWho is this training for? Youth Mental Health First Aid uses group activity\, role-playing\, and simulations to demonstrate: \n\nHow to assess a mental health crisis\nHow to select interventions and provide initial help\nHow to connect young people to professional\, peer\, and social support\, as well as self-help care.\n\nThe course covers:\n\nCommon signs and symptoms of mental health challenges and substance use challenges in this age group.\nHow to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis.\nHow to connect the youth with help.\nExpanded content on trauma\, substance use\, self-care\, and the impact of social media and bullying.\n\nThis course is offered in a two-part format and both components must be completed to earn your certification: \n\n2.5 hours of pre-work\, which must be completed by Friday\, May 16\nLive\, virtual course from 9:00am to 3:15pm on Wednesday\, May 21\n\nWhat will participants learn?\nParticipants learn the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents including anxiety\, depression\, psychosis\, eating disorders\, AD/HD\, disruptive behavior disorders\, and substance use disorder. \nParticipants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness\, or who are in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan. The Youth Mental Health First Aid USA curriculum is primarily focused on information participants can use to help adolescents and transition-aged youth\, ages 8-18. \nParticipants do not learn to diagnose\, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling.  \nWho should take this course?\nThis course is designed for any adults who regularly interact with adolescents\, and who are either ACA\, New England members or who work at camps located in Western Massachusetts. \nWe are able to provide this course free of charge to ACA\, New England members thanks to a SAMHSA grant \nWho created this course?\nThe National Council for Mental Wellbeing was instrumental in bringing Mental Health First Aid to the United States. SUMMARY:Think Like an OT: Using Occupational Therapy to Support Camp Staff
DESCRIPTION:Your staff need support! \nDo you ever find yourself repeatedly asking your staff to set up their programming? To use common sense with their campers? To follow the protocols you so carefully explained during staff training? Do you find yourself wishing your staff would just DO something? \nIf so\, this training is for you. \nGenerations Z and Alpha report higher rates of anxiety than previous generations\, especially at work. They also approach their work from a different perspective than Millennials and Gen X. Both of these factors can create conflict throughout the summer. Conflict\, in turn\, increases staff’s anxiety and activates the stress response system. \nWhen the stress response system is activated for too long\, it can shut down parts of the brain responsible for executive functioning\, creativity\, and problem solving… all important skills for doing well at camp! \nOf course they’re struggling to do their jobs; parts of their brains are switched off! How do we switch their brains back on? \nSupervisors need to start providing support for staff’s nervous systems. \nUsing evidence-based occupational therapy techniques\, this workshop teaches supervisors and organizational leadership how to support their staff’s nervous systems and bring out the best in them\, all summer long. Participants will learn how the stress response system works\, how it uniquely impacts this summer’s staff\, and will begin to make an action plan for how to maintain support for their staff throughout the summer. \nMeet the Instructor\n \nHi\, I’m Haley Pogachefsky\, OTD\, OTR/L \nAs a longtime camper and staff member at Hidden Valley Camp\, I am a strong believer in the powerful development that happens for kids and young adult staff in a summer camp setting. As I entered into my graduate degree in occupational therapy in 2021\, I saw changes in how staff were engaging with their camp experience. I was curious to learn more. \nI believe thinking like an occupational therapist is a superpower. As my OT doctoral research\, I developed a series of workshops to help camp employers and supervisors think like OTs to support their young adult staff’s critical thinking\, well-being\, and professional development throughout the summer. DESCRIPTION:Aquatic Risk Management for Camp Pools and Waterfronts\nDr. Rachel Griffiths and Dr. Tom Griffiths of the Aquatic Safety Research Group\, LLC are proud to offer a unique program for ACA members. This 3-hour\, fast paced seminar offers a variety of Proactive Prevention Strategies from numerous sources to make aquatic activities at campgrounds safer and more enjoyable. Suggestions for improved lifeguard surveillance as well as more efficient Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) will be offered. Safer design considerations will also be discussed. Best practices developed through hundreds of inspections of pools and waterfronts around the globe will be presented. The strategies offered will be practical\, effective\, and affordable. \nAbout the Instructors\n \nDr. Rachel Griffiths is the director of research and education for Aquatic Safety Research Group. She is also the President of Note and Float Life Jacket Fund\, which donates life jackets to aquatic facilities implementing the Note & Float program. Rachel conducts research and publishes water safety articles\, teaches Aquatic Risk Management seminars\, and has conducted inspections and written reports for a myriad of aquatic facility audits throughout the country. She is a recipient of the Aquatics International Power 25 Award. Rachel authored the 3rd edition of The Complete Swimming Pool Reference.  She received a Doctorate Degree in Public Health from Loma Linda University \n  \n \nDr. Tom Griffiths is the President and Founder of Aquatic Safety Research Group. Recognized as an international leader in water safety\, he has spent 38 years teaching\, coaching and managing aquatics at three major universities. Griffiths has produced videos\, textbooks\, articles\, and presentations in various areas of aquatics focusing his efforts on safety. He has also conducted hundreds of aquatic facility and beach inspections across the nation and abroad and teaches full day Aquatic Risk Management seminars. Perhaps his most significant contributions are the Five Minute Scanning Strategy©\, Griff’s Guard Stations©\, Disappearing Dummies\, his research on Shallow Water Blackout\, and the National Note & Float program. DESCRIPTION:This introductory level offering explores the myths and facts of suicide and how to intervene with youth struggling with suicidal ideation. \nBased on three SAMHSA Nationally Recognized Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) youth suicide prevention programs\, this training uses\, video\, discussion\, and role-play to enable participants to feel comfortable identifying signs and symptoms of youth suicide and how to assist a camper who may be suicidal. \nWho created this course?\nThis course is presented by trainers from the Center for School Behavioral Health at Mental Health America of Greater Houston (the Center) as part of its Emotional Backpack Project. SUMMARY:Self-Harm at Camp: Navigating Decision-Making Around Campers and Staff Who Threaten or Engage in Self-Harm (e-session)
DESCRIPTION:Nearly all camps have experienced campers and/or staff who threaten to\, or actually\, engage in self-harm during camp. \nThis e-session\, co-hosted by ACA\, New England & ACA\, New York and New Jersey\, will be led by three experts in the summer camp space: social worker and camp consultant Nick Teich\, and attorneys Isaac Mamaysky and Rachel Fendell Satinsky. \nDuring the web session\, we will dive into the topic of self-harm and how to prepare directors and camp leadership to make decisions such as: \n\nWhen do we need to send campers or staff home?\nHow can we consider what mechanisms we should put in place if they should stay?\nHow can we know what individuals truly mean when they threaten self-harm or make suicidal statements?\nAre we asking enough questions about mental health before camp?\nMost importantly\, how can we keep our campers and staff safe\, get them the care they need\, and ensure that we are abiding by the law?\n\nThe presenters will leave time for questions and answers from participants. \nAbout the presenters:\n \nDr. Nick Teich is the founder and was the longtime director of an overnight camp in New Hampshire. In addition to his practice\, Isaac has over a decade of experience as the founder and director of a large ACA-accredited overnight camp in Wayne County\, Pennsylvania. If that sounds tedious\, we promise it won’t be! \nJoin Emily Golinsky to take a deep dive into the behind-the-scenes pieces of work that form the foundation for successful summers. We’ll look at things such as: \n\nquestions you should be asking as part of your camper application/enrollment process\,\nwebsite/marketing messaging that encourages applications from campers who meet your intended population\, and\nthe fine print that explains your expectations and policies to parents/guardians.\n\nWe’ll also dig into examples of complicated behavioral situations that arose locally this past summer and how specific language and policy elements will assist with resolving those challenges. Bring your situational examples and your existing forms\, policies\, and procedures! \nFrancesca Korbas\, Esq\, is a former practicing special education attorney and civil rights investigator\, with a deep understanding of inclusivity as it relates to youth with differing abilities. Francesca will also share information and recommendations for camps related to The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)\, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (the precursor of ADA)\, and more that will help you better understand what your camp can (and maybe can’t) do. DESCRIPTION:ACA New England needs YOU to join an amazing team of volunteers!\nJoin us for our next Accreditation Volunteer Course (formerly known as the Associate Visitors Course).\nDue to low enrollment\, the 10/22 offering has been cancelled. However\, there are lots more opportunities throughout the year (see the application below). \nThis course is a two part training: AVC PART 1 is a self-paced online pre-course and AVC PART 2 is a live session with trained facilitators. Participants must attend all learning sessions over the timeframe to successfully become an accreditation volunteer. This course requires active participation and engagement. \nACA’s accreditation program is the only national peer review program of its kind for the camp industry. Being an ACA accreditation volunteer (visitor) provides you with the experience to build your network\, polish your skills in observation and risk management\, and develop mentoring opportunities for both you and the camps you work with. As much as you give to this experience\, you’ll gain from new ideas\, perspectives\, and approaches to the mission-driven work of the camp industry. \nTo become an accreditation volunteer\, please complete these steps: \n\nSubmit an Accreditation Volunteer Application (online) \n\nOn the form\, you’ll indicate which Accreditation Volunteer Course Part II you want to take (formerly known as the Associate Visitors Course) – FREE\n\n\n\nOnce you are registered for the course\, you’ll be enrolled in the required online pre-course work (AVC PART 1 up to 8 hours) a month prior to your PART 2 course.
