Job Description

ANIMAL AND GARDEN MANAGER, WOODVALE FARM Responsibilities: Oversee the day to day functions of a seasonally-operated historical, 12-acre, working farm including facilities maintenance, animal care, chores, and gardening. Responsible for the care of a herd of sheep, one to three heifers, pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, and rabbits plus two gardens totaling approximately one-third of an acre. Carry out all duties in a manner that makes the farm, animals, and gardens safe, usable, approachable, and as accessible as possible to children. Maintain relations with several local farmers who assist in the operation of the farm.

Qualifications: Requires previous experience caring for farm animals and gardens plus demonstrated ability to carry out maintenance. Flexibility, ability to work independently, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a must. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license with no risk-creating infractions. Must be able sustain physical tasks throughout the workday and to lift 50+ pounds. Previous experience working with children and a bachelors degree are preferred but not required. Must hold a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. No pets. All applicants are subject to a criminal background records check. Compensation: $9.50 per hour, 40 hour week.

The Site: The Woodvale Farm, part of URI’s Environmental Education Center, is situated on 2,300 acres of forests, wetlands, and old farmland–the W. Alton Jones Campus. Dedicated to environmental education, the Center has been offering quality day and residential programs for 30 years. Woodvale Farm serves as an educational destination for students on school field trips in the spring and as the site for a farm day camp in the summer. Children ages 5-8 participate in outdoor lessons in farming, animal care, gardening, and pioneer history. Dates of Employment: May 12 to August 29. Closing Date: When filled.
