Aquatics Director - Fessenden Day Camp


Job Description


  • Direct supervisor of aquatics staff and all swimming activities. 
  • Lead a Red Cross Learn to Swim program that teaches swimming in a fun and meaningful way.
  • Uphold all policies and philosophies of the Fessenden Day Camp. 
  • Schedule swim lessons, job rotation, and afternoon lifeguard schedule. 
  • Participate in implementation of all swimming activities including teaching and lifeguarding. 
  • Train aquatic staff in their daily responsibilities and emergency procedures.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork with the Red Cross for site, staff, and campers. 
  • Oversee the evaluation of campers in swim lessons and ensure necessary paperwork is completed.
  • Set a good example for staff and campers in all areas, including but not limited to accountability, fairness, organization, cleanliness, punctuality, following the rules, and sportsmanship.
  • Coordinate and assist in leading camp-wide initiatives and events with director team.
  • Coordinate with CIT director to schedule and teach CITs to assist in swimming activities and teach aquatics staff how to appropriately work with and educate assigned CITs. 
  • Assist in many different responsibilities to ensure the safety, well-being of both staff and campers.
  • Conduct daily check of pool areas and equipment for cleanliness and safety concerns.
  • Assist in emergency procedures and ensure necessary paperwork is completed.
  • Available 8:45am-4:00pm, Monday – Friday and any other necessary time for the camp season.
  • Attend staff training and plan and implement aquatics staff training before and during camp season.
  • Communicate and work with groups and individuals from a variety of age and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to staff and campers. 
  • Conduct formal evaluations of aquatics staff mid-season and at the end of the season.
  • Regularly conduct informal evaluations of staff in assigned division.
  • Discuss with director any concerns about staff and evaluate future employment. 
  • Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate positive behavior management techniques.
  • Proactively communicate with parents about successes and concerns regarding their child.

Physical Demands:

  • Occasional lifting, bending, and climbing stairs 
  • Some high activity which may include swimming, running, dancing, and jumping.
  • Frequent talking, listening, walking, sitting, and standing

  • Current Lifeguard and CPR/AED/First Aid certifications from a nationally recognized organization.
  • Current Water Safety Instructor certification. 
  • Must be 21 years of age or older. 
  • Pass a MA State run background check including a CORI and SORI.


Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience lifeguarding and teaching swimming preferably including at a camp and/or supervisory position at a pool or waterfront.
  • Desire and ability to supervise, lead, and positively manage staff and campers in a cooperative, team-oriented camp atmosphere.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Possess excellent character, integrity, adaptability, patience, self-control, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor. 
  • Must be 21 years of age or older. 
  • Pass a MA State run background check including a CORI and SORI.
