West End House Camp is recruiting a camp nurse to work for 8 weeks, from Jun 16 – August 9. If you are a Registered Nurse or LPN looking to provide care to children and young adults this summer, this is the job for you! Nurses manage the Health Center, providing top quality care to campers and staff for the duration of the summer.
This is the perfect opportunity for School Nurses or those interested in advancing their career in a camp setting. Discounted camper tuition is available for candidates with boys that would like to attend camp.
General Responsibilities
To be the health care manager for the camp; supervise health and cleanliness standards; work with the camp director and staff; help provide adequate physical health conditions for all.
Qualifications
Must be a licensed Registered Nurse/ Practical Nurse in Maine.
First Aid and CPR certification required.
Physical ability to respond to situations requiring first aid, routine interventions, and emergencies including lifting/assisting campers and staff and getting to remote locations on camp property quickly.
Be able to read prescriptions and health exams from physicians
Be able to assess unsanitary or unhealthy conditions at camp
Experience with children and young adults
Ability to originate, update and/or monitor health care, maintain records and implement the health care plan
Experience working at summer camp preferred
Desire to live and work in a camp community
Ability to accept guidance and supervision
Good character, integrity and adaptability as well as enthusiasm, a sense of humor, patience and self control
Specific Roles & Responsibilities
Prepare the Health Center for the camp season
Conduct inventory of supplies and, after consultation with the executive director, place orders ensuring timely arrival of supplies
Meet with camp doctor prior to the start of the season; review standing orders
Review camper medical records and partner with parents and staff to create tailored health plans that adhere to camper needs.
Participate in and lead specific areas of staff training pertaining to camp health and safety, CPR, first aid and the use of universal precautions for infection control
Ensure that each staff member and camper has on file a ‘health history and examination form’ as required
Set up system for health screening for arriving campers and staff, as well as a system for health screening for trips out of camp
Be the camp’s primary on-site health care provider: coordinate coverage of the health center with the executive director
Establish and follow appropriate medical routines including record keeping in the daily medical log, disposal of medical waste, managing and safeguarding medications and utilizing approved standing orders
Understand ACA and state expectations regarding health care: assist executive director and office manager in completing necessary documentation to meet ACA and state standards
Post hours for daily medications and health call; make announcements at meal times
Ensure allergies are handled safely and that campers with dietary restrictions are taken care of during mealtimes.
Make appointments, when necessary, with medical/dental personnel in the community
Check and issue first aid kits for out of camp trips; work with trip leaders to assure attention to trip participants medical needs
Help develop and implement sound emergency procedures
Keep accident/incident reports that can be used for risk management assessment
Keep office apprised of all visits to the infirmary by campers and staff; in conjunction with the director and assistant director, contact parents as per camp guidelines and for serious health concerns
Monitor health of all campers and staff including kitchen staff
Assist in other areas of camp as time allows and as requested by the assistant director or director
Keep infirmary neat and clean during the season; clean infirmary prior to departure – Participate in postseason closing of Health Center.
Prepare a summary and evaluation of the camp season including inventories, staff evaluations, camper reports on health problems and make recommendations for the following season
Monitor and evaluate camp procedures, facilities and conditions and suggest modifications that would create more healthful conditions at camp
