In Memoriam – January 2020

These dedicated individuals touched the lives of countless youth in New England and beyond through their passion for excellent camping experiences. Our thoughts are we with their families, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
Theresa Phinney, 1925-2019. We are sad to report that long-time ACA New England Executive Director, Theresa ‘Terry’ Phinney, died on December 22, 2019, surrounded by her family.
Terry was hired by ACA New England as the Office Secretary in 1966. As her duties expanded, she became the Executive Director and for 10 years, she administered Title XX Federal funds for camperships. She particularly enjoyed hearing the story about how under her management, the ACA New England checkbook balance grew from $56 to more than $200,000 and that the section was able to purchase the office building in Waltham, MA.
Terry was honored by ACA New England and ACA in November 1987. The new wing of the ACA Bradford Woods office was named in her honor as the ‘Terry Phinney Wing’ for which New England members donated $150,000. Terry was honored by many people at the dedication and she spoke of how much the day meant to her in front of colleagues, friends and family.
Over her 25 years, Terry eagerly helped many day, resident, private and not-for-profit camp folks. She also mentored numerous ACA “Section” Executives who kept the organization vital and relevant. Terry retired form ACA New England in 1990 and will forever be a legend in our industry and our hearts.
Annabelle Cohen of Dedham, formerly of Chestnut Hill, MA and Manchester, NH, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 25, 2019. Beloved wife of the late Arnold J. Cohen, whom she was married to for 66 years.
She was past president of Temple Adath Yeshuran (Manchester, NH), founder of the Derryfield School, Director and officer of the Cohen Camps, served on numerous Jewish community and public service agency boards, and committees at Newbridge on the Charles.
Hayden Marshall-Inman was among those killed Monday, December 9, 2019 when the volcano erupted on White Island in New Zealand.
Hayden spent more than a decade of his summers as a camp employee at YMCA Camp of Maine as one of the dozens of foreign counselors recruited each year.
Camp CEO Jeff Gleason said Marshall-Inman was on staff there each season the camp was open from 2004 to 2015, often serving as waterfront director. “We have 600 plus campers every summer so that times ten is 6,000 people,” Gleason said. “I’ve gone to the grocery store and post office in town and people remember him.”
