DESCRIPTION:Youth Mental Health First Aid (pre-work and live virtual course)\nTHIS COURSE IS FULL AND HAS REACHED CAPACITY\nTo be added to the WAITLIST for this course or other upcoming YMHFA courses organized by ACA\, New England\, complete THIS FORM.\n\nThis is an 8-hour education program that introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents\, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention\, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Youth Mental Health First Aid uses group activity\, role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional\, peer\, social\, and self-help care. \nThis course is offered in a two-part format and both components must be completed to earn your certification: \n\n5 hours of pre-work must be completed by Friday\, January 22\n5 hour live\, virtual course from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm on Monday\, February 1\n\nWhat will participants learn? This course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents\, including anxiety\, depression\, psychosis\, eating disorders\, AD/HD\, disruptive behavior disorders\, and substance use disorder. \nParticipants do not learn to diagnose\, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling – rather\, participants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan. The Youth Mental Health First Aid USA curriculum is primarily focused on information participants can use to help adolescents and transition-age youth\, ages 8-18. \nWho should take this course? The course is designed for any adults who regularly interact with adolescents who are ACA\, New England members. \nWho created the course? The National Council for Behavioral Health was instrumental in bringing Mental Health First Aid to the U.S. Mental Health First Aid USA worked with experts at the National Technical Assistance Center for Children’s Mental Health at the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development to develop the youth program. \nInstructors:  \nKarl Blumel\, Residence Education Coordinator for Selection\, Training\, and Leadership\, University of Massachusetts Amherst \nRosie McMahan\, Program Manager\, Mass Mentoring Partnership & Counselor/Educator\, Optimistic Options \nWhen: Monday\, February 1\, 2021\, 10:00 am – 3:30 pm (pre-work must be completed by Friday\, January 22 for participants to receive log-in information for the live portion of the course). \nWhere: Virtually \nCost: FREE for ACA\, New England members. DESCRIPTION:Who do you aspire to be as a leader?  And what is your personal shadow—the dark part of the self that threatens to diminish your impact in the world? And how does this inner clarity impact your efforts to create communities that are diverse\, inclusive\, and equitable? Join us for a powerful session that will invite you to engage in some deep inner work and reflection around these questions. \nDuring this session\, we will explore the interconnected nature of inner change (within the self) and outer change (in the world around us). We will reflect on our own highest aspirations for who we want to be as leaders in the work we do and will take the unusual step of confronting the shadow—the dark side of our aspirations—that we all possess but often refuse to acknowledge. \nFollowing a 90-minute e-workshop focused on engaging with these questions\, we will gather to think through some specific leadership challenges related to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion brought to the session by participants. He currently serves as the Chief Program Officer at the New Politics Leadership Academy\, a non-profit that is dedicated to recruiting and developing military veterans and alumni of national service programs to seek political office. Before stepping into this role\, he was the Vice President of Leadership Development at City Year\, Inc.\, the national service program headquartered in Boston\, Massachusetts.  Max received his doctorate of education (Ed.D.) from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2005; his studies focused on civic leadership education. Max is also a certified Integral Professional Coach.  Max’s book\, Race and Social Change: A Quest\, A Study\, A Call to Action\, was published by Jossey Bass in 2017. It currently appears on lists of resources for understanding racial justice developed by Duke Law School\, the University of San Francisco\, and several other institutions.  Max attended camp for 10 years as a child\, and his doctoral work focused on kids participating in a week-long residential camp program. His two children attend overnight camp in the Berkshires\, and his wife has been on summer staff there as well. Camp has been an integral part of Max’s life both personally and professionally\, and he is excited to work with this audience. \n

Additionally\, in her 30 years in camp\, Kat has directed the Athens YWCO Camp for Girls\, Girl Scout Camp Meriwether\, YMCA Camp Colman in the Seattle area\, and both Girl Scouts camps in Virginia: Camp Pamunkey Ridge and Camp Kittamaqund. \nAs an active member of the American Camp Association (ACA)\, Kat serves as an Accreditation Visitor and Instructor Trainer.  During her tenure with ACA\, Kat has served as the Education Director for ACA and has volunteered for several years with the Southeastern Region Board of Directors and on the LCOL of the Evergreen Region. \nKat has spoken at several youth professional gatherings from camp professionals to recreation professionals to educators.  She was on the writing team for two books\, Creating Positive Youth Outcomes and Designing Quality Youth Program. \nKat graduated from the Recreation & Leisure Studies program at the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Education.  In 2007\, Kat was honored as the University of Georgia College of Education Professional Alumni of the Year.  The ACA awarded Kat the National Service Award celebrating her work volunteering for both multiple ACA regions and on the national level. She is a current member of the ACA National Awards Committee. And serves on the Editorial Advisory Committee as both a frequent contributor and member of Camping Magazine. Most recently\, she was inducted into the Pioneers in Camping\, an honor society of camp professionals who have worked in the field for 30 years. \n

SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid Training
DESCRIPTION:Do you like to spend time outdoors? Accidents happen; if you or someone in your group got hurt\, would you know what to do? People get hurt\, sick\, or lost. Many back country emergencies are preventable and even when bad things happen\, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. \nWilderness First Aid is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants more than basic level of first aid training for short trips with family\, friends\, and outdoor groups. The 16 hour long (two-day) program focuses on the skills of: Response and Assessment\, Musculoskeletal Injuries\, Environmental Emergencies\, Survival Skills\, Soft Tissue Injuries\, and Medical Emergencies. \nThose who complete the course and pass the written and practical skills will receive a Wilderness First Aid certification from SOLO which is valid for 2 years. SOLO is among the leaders in Wilderness Medicine Training and certification. Coffee and snacks will be provided each day. This course will be held at Wasserman Park in Merrimack\, NH. \nDue to COVID 19; we are capping class sizes to no more than 12 people. Classroom space will be setup to allow for students to remain 6ft apart during didactic lessons. For practical work\, students are paired with one person\, and one person only. These people will work together during practical sessions/assessments and otherwise will be expected to remain separated during class. The pair will remain the same from day one through day two. Brian was the primary Finance resource for thirty-two Resource Directors\, four Senior Resource Directors and provided oversight for the development and delivery of Financial Management resources to local Ys across the United States. \nBrian also served as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President – Operations for the YMCA of Greater Toledo\, Senior Vice President and CFO for The Redwoods Group and CFO for Communities In Schools of North Carolina. \nBrian has additional experience in the for-profit sector including founding a consulting practice that provided fractional CFO services to clients throughout the Midwest and Northeast US. He holds a Master of Business Administration in Accounting and Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Akron. He is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in both Ohio and North Carolina and is a Chartered Global Management Accountant. \nBrian and his family reside in Wake Forest\, North Carolina and his daughter works as a camp counselor at a local resident camp. DESCRIPTION:For camp professionals with 1-4 or more years of camp director experience \n(Both day and resident camp directors are welcome! As space is limited\, we can only accommodate one director per camp at this time.) \nHaving a network of colleagues to share ideas with\, to get feedback from\, and to lean on for resources and supports can be so important in the camping industry. It helps us stay connected\, broaden our perspectives\, think innovatively\, and strengthen our community. Last year’s attendees shared: “as a participant\, I most valued: \n\nBuilding connections and relationships with other camp professionals\nExpanding my network\, as I work alone\nSupport – especially through the pandemic\nLively conversations\, open discussion\, and time to share practices and ideas.”\n\nThis year\, we are taking our round table series virtual! Join a group of your peers for monthly facilitated discussions in a safe and professional place where you can discuss issues of common concern and a way to build your professional network. Topics will include: \n\nBuilding Your Team: How do we hire strategically? What about dismissals? Who is invited back or promoted? How do we mentor\, engage\, support and grow our staff team?\nTough Realities of the Role: Are our risk management plans safe and effective? What is the balance of tradition and change? How do we make hard decisions and have difficult conversations? How do we manage money and budgets?\nPeople to People: Who should be recognized as part of our camp orbit? How do we work successfully with campers\, parents/guardians\, agencies\, donors\, neighbors\, and interested parties?\n\nTopics are subject to change based upon the needs/interests of participants. \nEach month\, there will be time for large group discussion\, presentations/guest topic experts\, and small group discussion. \nEmily Golinsky\, Founder of Bright Moose Training\, Consulting & Advocacy\, former Executive Director at Camp Starfish and a member of ACA\, New England’s New Camp Director Workshop faculty\, will facilitate the sessions. Emily is a regular presenter at conferences and is active in ACA\, New England\, where she is a Lead Visitor\, sits on the Fund Development and Conference Planning Committees\, and is a member of the Faculty for the New Camp Directors Workshop. Emily is a Board Member for the Hawkeye Campership Fund and for the NHCamps Association\, where she is chair of the annual conference. She holds a BS in Health Psychology from Mass College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences\, and a Master of Science in Camp Administration and Leadership from Touro University Nevada. She is also an education advocate for youth with special needs and a certified Adult Mental Health First Aid Instructor. Emily’s sense of humor and genuine warm connection to individuals comes through in her facilitation style. Fair warning:  she is an avid collector of terribly awesome puns. \n  \n

At New England Village in Pembroke\, MA\, she gained experience in working as a Direct Support Worker and eventually as the Director of The Sollar Wellness Center specifically designed for this population.
