SUMMARY:Youth Suicide Prevention Training
DESCRIPTION:Youth Suicide Prevention Training \n*This session is now FULL and registration is CLOSED.* \nBased on three SAMHSA Nationally Recognized Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) youth suicide prevention programs\, this training uses video\, discussion and role-play to enable participants to feel comfortable identifying signs and symptoms of youth suicide and how to assist a camper who may be suicidal. \nEach e-session is limited to 25 camps/programs. Your camp’s registration will come with two seats. \nWe highly recommend you join us live for the most robust and engaging experience. If you are unable to do so\, the recording will be made available to registered attendees for 15 days following the live e-session. \nThis course will be presented by trainers from the Center for School Behavioral Health at Mental Health America of Greater Houston (the Center) as part of its Emotional Backpack Project. For more information about the Emotional Backpack project\, you can visit here. The Center serves as a “living laboratory” for incubating innovative\, cost-effective and replicable best practices to improve the behavioral health of students by facilitating collective action; providing highly specialized professional development opportunities\, technical assistance and community education; and conducting research\, advocacy\, and policy analysis. \nWe encourage you to join both this training and the Child Mental Health module on January 18\, however you do not need to attend both. They are offered independently of one another. \nAbout the trainers:  \nKeenisha Protho is a Licensed Master Social Worker in the state of Texas with 10 plus years of experience in the field of social work. Originally from Northwest Indiana\, Keenisha started her career as a contracted case manager working with families who lost their children to Child Protective Services to regain custody of their children in 2012. Keenisha received a Bachelor and Maters of Social Work from Indiana University. Over the years\, Keenisha has gained a wealth of knowledge in her experience as a Family Support Specialist\, CPS case worker\, Advocacy Coordinator\, Community Educator\, PRN therapist and Behavior Specialist. As a Professional Development Specialist\, Keenisha enjoys training school personnel and other youth interfacing staff and agencies on topics such as youth mental health and youth suicide prevention. \nSharifa J. Charles serves as a Professional Development Specialist for the Center for School Behavioral Health at Mental Health America – Greater Houston. She is charged with creating and providing high impact\, enriching and culturally sensitive mental and behavioral health professional development opportunities to school districts and community organizations throughout the city of Houston. To date\, she has provided mental and behavioral health trainings in over 25 districts\, countless youth serving organizations across the Greater Houston Area. Ms. Charles has also been deployed to Hurricane ravaged communities like Bay County Florida and the United States Virgin Islands to provide professional development trainings to counselors and first responders. Throughout her professional career\, Sharifa has proudly worked for or collaborated with countless CBOS\, government agencies and NGOs. DESCRIPTION:This course is designed to provide an overview of the ACA Accreditation Process. \nEvery camp being visited in 2023 must have at least one person who completes this course on behalf of the camp; that person must actively assist in preparation for the accreditation visit\, be engaged in on-site operations during the camp season\, and participate fully in the on-site accreditation visit. \nParticipants feel excited\, engaged\, and ready to manage the accreditation process for their camp. They know where to find and how to use information\, resources\, and technology provided by ACA. They can navigate the Accreditation Process Guide v.2019 to understand compliance and applicability of standards\, including how to maintain accreditation through the visit and non-visit years and the purpose and steps of preparing written documentation. \nThis course will be In Person \n*Multiple people from a camp are encouraged to take this course.

DESCRIPTION:Youth Mental Health First Aid \n(HYBRID COURSE: Online pre-work and live in-person course) \nThis is an 8-hour education program and certification that introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents\, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention\, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Youth Mental Health First Aid uses group activity\, role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional\, peer\, social\, and self-help care. \nThis course is offered in a two-part format and both components must be completed to earn your certification: \n\n2.5 hours of pre-work must be completed by Monday\, October 10\n5.5 hour live\, in-person course from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm on Wednesday\, October 12\, 2022 at Copper Cannon Camp\, 231 Gale River Rd\, Bethlehem\, NH 03574\n\n\nLunch WILL be provided by Copper Cannon. Please be sure to share any dietary restrictions during the registration process.\n\n*Please only register if you can commit to completing both the pre-work and the full in-person session. Because this course results in a certification\, attendees must fully participate in the entire program.* \nWhat will participants learn? This course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents\, including anxiety\, depression\, psychosis\, eating disorders\, AD/HD\, disruptive behavior disorders\, and substance use disorder. \nParticipants do not learn to diagnose\, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling – rather\, participants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan. DESCRIPTION:Camp staff who are teaching Outdoor Living Skills and Campcraft are encouraged to attend. Join us as we intertwine curriculum review of the skills and skill levels as introduced in the Art of Outdoor Living book published by The Maine Summer Camps (MSC) member organization.  Staff teaching curriculum for Junior Maine Woodsman\, Maine Woodsman and Junior Maine Guide will find this particularly helpful. \nWe will provide time for instruction and practice of skills to build instructor confidence and will cover teaching methods and some nature/natural history. Safety and proper care and use of equipment while used in the outdoors will be emphasized. For more details on skills covered and goals\, Click to view the WYO – 3 day OLS Clinic curriculum. \n \nThere will be one outdoor overnight campsite experience on the Wyonegonic property including outdoor cooking and encampment. Participants should bring their personal gear and their copy of The Art of Outdoor Living (books will be available for purchase at cost of $34). Food and group campsite materials including tents are provided. Canoeing and first aid skills are not included in this training. \nInstructors: Ginny Geyer and Katie Curtis. Both are Junior Maine Guide testers\, experienced instructors and Katie is a Registered Maine Guide. \nDates: Friday June 17 9:00am – Sunday June 19 4:30pm \nCost: $130.  (Books can be purchased for $34 for participants who do not have their own copy.) \nCertification: This is not a certification course.  At the end of the workshop\, participants will be provided with a checklist of skills covered and written feedback from the instructors that can be provided to Camp Directors.  This is an example of documentation that can be added to a participants documented experience and staff skills verification for specialized activities (ACA standards ST.8 and ST.33).

However\, when conducting an archery class\, those under the age of 18 are required to have an adult (18+) supervision. \nCertification: National Archery Association – Level I. Valid for three years from date of issue. \nNote:  Full attendance and participation is required. Mandatory online coursework must be completed 2 days prior to attending the in person training.  Plan for anywhere from 3-8 hours to complete the pre-course work (time varies based on prior experience or familiarity with material).  We plan to release access to the online training 2-3 weeks prior to the in person training.
