SUMMARY:Supporting My Team as a New Supervisor
DESCRIPTION:About This Event…\nSo you’re a new supervisor! Congratulations. You clearly were great at your old job – that’s how you got promoted. However\, the skills and talents required to be a great counselor or activity instructor aren’t the same as those required to be an effective supervisor. There are several specific areas of learning new supervisors should begin mastering long before they begin the actual work of mentoring and leading others.  \nJoin Emily for a crash course in stepping up to leadership. We’ll cover the top mistakes new supervisors make (and how to avoid them\, of course!)\, the best ways to build credibility\, and the parts of the role you might not realize are now your responsibility.  \nTo cap it off\, we’ll look at some familiar scenarios from your camp counselor days through a lens of supervisory decision-making. This workshop is designed for both new supervisors and/or those responsible for onboarding/training incoming supervisory staff.  \nAbout The Speaker…\nEmily Golinsky \nTraining\, Consulting & Advocacy\, Bright Moose LLC \nWith session feedback including “tremendously helpful\,” “definitely not the same-old\,” “fun and informative” and “not to be missed – a reason to come to the conference\,” Emily Golinsky is the Founder of Bright Moose LLC. She provides training\, coaching\, consultation and professional development support to camps\, schools and youth orgs\, guided by the motto “Help Others Shine Bright!” Emily sits on the Board of Directors for NHCamps and is an ACA New England Visitor\, Conference Committee member\, New Camp Directors’ Workshop faculty member\, and the Newer Camp Directors’ Roundtable facilitator. She is also an education Advocate for youth with special needs and a certified Adult Mental Health First Aid Instructor. Emily spent 14 years as the Executive Director for Camp Starfish (NH)\, holds a BS in Health Psychology and MS in Camp Administration/Leadership\, and is an avid collector of terribly awesome puns. \n\nWho Should Attend…\nThis presentation is for\, but not limited to\, supervisors (new or seasonal)\, managers\, directors\, and owners.  \nWhy Attend …\nHow will your camp benefit from you attending this program? \nAttendees will boost job satisfaction for themselves and the people they oversee and help build confidence and credibility with the people you oversee which will lead to returning staff. \nHow does your career benefit from you attending this program?  \nAttending this event will help build confidence as a leader\, will help increase your collective knowledge of the field and management of others\, and build connections and resources with peers. \nHow to Register …\nMake sure you’re logged into the ACA Illinois Services Portal to register. Click here to create your profile or click here to login. \nQuestions? Contact registration@acail.org.

Youth Mental Health First Aid uses group activity\, role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional\, peer\, social\, and self-help care. \nThis course is offered in a two-part format and both components must be completed to earn your certification: \n\n5 hours of pre-work must be completed by Friday\, January 22\n5 hour live\, virtual course from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm on Monday\, February 1\n\nWhat will participants learn? This course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents\, including anxiety\, depression\, psychosis\, eating disorders\, AD/HD\, disruptive behavior disorders\, and substance use disorder. \nParticipants do not learn to diagnose\, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling – rather\, participants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan. The Youth Mental Health First Aid USA curriculum is primarily focused on information participants can use to help adolescents and transition-age youth\, ages 8-18. \nWho should take this course? The course is designed for any adults who regularly interact with adolescents who are ACA\, New England members. \nWho created the course? The National Council for Behavioral Health was instrumental in bringing Mental Health First Aid to the U.S. Mental Health First Aid USA worked with experts at the National Technical Assistance Center for Children’s Mental Health at the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development to develop the youth program. \nInstructors: \nKarl Blumel\, Residence Education Coordinator for Selection\, Training\, and Leadership\, University of Massachusetts Amherst \nRosie McMahan\, Program Manager\, Mass Mentoring Partnership & Counselor/Educator\, Optimistic Options \nWhen: Monday\, February 1\, 2021\, 10:00 am – 3:30 pm (pre-work must be completed by Friday\, January 22 for participants to receive log-in information for the live portion of the course). \nWhere: Virtually \nCost: FREE for ACA\, New England members. Registration by January 15 and pre-work completion by January 22 is required. *We are able to provide this course free of charge to ACA\, New England members due to a grant.* \nTo register: Click here. You will register through ACA\, New England\, but additional communication about the course will come from the National Council for Behavioral Health/ Mental Health First Aid USA. \n*Please only register if you can commit to completing both the pre-work and the full live session. Because this course results in a certification\, attendees must fully participate in the entire program.* \nSpace is limited to 20 participants\, so register early! Because you need to be entered into the system to complete your pre-work\, the deadline to register is Friday\, January 15\, 2021. \nIf the course is full or you are interested\, but not available on this date\, please contact Kerry Salvo\, Director of Education and Professional Development\, kerry@acanewengland.org\, 781-541-6080 ext. 104. SUMMARY:Fall E-Seminar: Leading with Purpose In Our Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Work
DESCRIPTION:Who do you aspire to be as a leader?  And what is your personal shadow—the dark part of the self that threatens to diminish your impact in the world? And how does this inner clarity impact your efforts to create communities that are diverse\, inclusive\, and equitable? Join us for a powerful session that will invite you to engage in some deep inner work and reflection around these questions. \nDuring this session\, we will explore the interconnected nature of inner change (within the self) and outer change (in the world around us). We will reflect on our own highest aspirations for who we want to be as leaders in the work we do and will take the unusual step of confronting the shadow—the dark side of our aspirations—that we all possess but often refuse to acknowledge. \nFollowing a 90-minute e-workshop focused on engaging with these questions\, we will gather to think through some specific leadership challenges related to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion brought to the session by participants. Together\, we’ll explore how we might address those challenges in ways that align with our mission and avoid our personal shadows. \nThe goals of this session are as follows: \n\nGain a higher consciousness of the interconnected nature of inner and outer change\nAchieve greater clarity regarding our own person leadership mission and shadow\nBuild skills and understanding around how to harness this inner clarity to address real-world challenges\n\nWhen:             Wednesday\, November 18\, 2020\, 10:30 am – 1:30 pm \nProgram will run approximately 10:30 am – 1:00 pm with optional networking from 1:00 pm – 1:30 pm \nWhere:            Online\, via Zoom \nHow Much:     $40/members; $60/non-members \nRegistration Link \nSponsored by:\n \nIf you are joining us for our Navigating Your Financial Path Forward e-seminar on October 21\, save 20% off of your registration fee for this Leading With Purpose e-seminar! \nQuestions? Reach out to Kerry\, ACA New England Director of Education and Professional Development\, at kerry@acanewengland.org or 781-541-6080 ext. 104 \nRegistrations are non-refundable\, but may be transferred to another eligible individual prior to the start of the event. \n Participants will receive 3 Continuing Education Credits (CECs) for their full participation.  \nPlease note: We do not want cost to prohibit a camp professional from joining our event. Should the price of this e-seminar be a barrier\, please reach out to Kerry Salvo\, kerry@acanewengland.org to discuss financial assistance options. \nAbout the Presenter  \nDr. Max Klau is an author\, coach\, speaker\, scholar\, and leadership development consultant living in Boston. He currently serves as the Chief Program Officer at the New Politics Leadership Academy\, a non-profit that is dedicated to recruiting and developing military veterans and alumni of national service programs to seek political office. SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid Training
DESCRIPTION:Do you like to spend time outdoors? Accidents happen; if you or someone in your group got hurt\, would you know what to do? People get hurt\, sick\, or lost. Many back country emergencies are preventable and even when bad things happen\, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. \nWilderness First Aid is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants more than basic level of first aid training for short trips with family\, friends\, and outdoor groups. The 16 hour long (two-day) program focuses on the skills of: Response and Assessment\, Musculoskeletal Injuries\, Environmental Emergencies\, Survival Skills\, Soft Tissue Injuries\, and Medical Emergencies. \nThose who complete the course and pass the written and practical skills will receive a Wilderness First Aid certification from SOLO which is valid for 2 years. SOLO is among the leaders in Wilderness Medicine Training and certification. Coffee and snacks will be provided each day. This course will be held at Wasserman Park in Merrimack\, NH. \nDue to COVID 19; we are capping class sizes to no more than 12 people. Classroom space will be setup to allow for students to remain 6ft apart during didactic lessons. For practical work\, students are paired with one person\, and one person only. These people will work together during practical sessions/assessments and otherwise will be expected to remain separated during class. The pair will remain the same from day one through day two. We will not be teaching group scenarios and will also only discuss certain components\, such as patient lifting and moving. \nThe cost of this invaluable training is $160.00 per person. \nFor questions\, call Merrimack Parks & Recreation at 603-882-1046
