DESCRIPTION:The ACA New England New Camp Director Workshop\, or NCDW\, is specifically designed for camp directors with 4 years or less of camp administration experience.   In a small\, supportive atmosphere\, we will discuss the many tools needed for running a successful day or resident camp. Learn from the pros about everything from staff hiring to working with parents\, from dealing with children to handling the everyday situations and issues that are an inevitable part of your life at camp. A team of experienced directors and consultants will lead workshops and provide invaluable materials and hands-on training scenarios. SUMMARY:Safe Kids Thrive! Tips and Tools to create safer environments to keep kids safe.
DESCRIPTION:As Massachusetts schools\, daycare centers\, after-school programs\, summer camps\, and a host of other child and youth-serving organizations (YSOs) re-open\, we look forward to welcoming back the students\, children\, and youth whom we have not seen other than virtually for more than a year. We know that the stresses and strains of pandemic isolation on children and families have been significant for many in our communities\, and thus can anticipate that some will be returning to us bearing its physical\, emotional\, and behavioral consequences. It is a good idea\, therefore\, to remind ourselves about what to look for in terms of recognizing\, responding to\, and reporting suspected or self-disclosed child maltreatment – as well as the tools available to help us evaluate our organizational abuse prevention policies\, procedures\, and protocols. \n  \nFor these purposes\, the Massachusetts Legislative Task Force on the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse – co-chaired by the Massachusetts Children’s Trust and the Office of the Child Advocate – has worked with multiple state and local agencies and organizations to produce a website called “Safe Kids Thrive” (see safekidsthrive.org) as a platform that provides the necessary tools\, resources\, and guidance in a user-friendly\, searchable and interactive format. \n  \nThe attached agenda  describes a 90-minute training session the Task Force is making available to YSOs across the state to demonstrate how the website can be used to refresh ourselves and our staffs with the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure that our children are safe and protected from harm\, and the steps we are required to take if we are concerned about a child’s well-being. SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid
DESCRIPTION:Do you like to spend time outdoors? Accidents happen; if you or someone in your group got hurt\, would you know what to do? People get hurt\, sick\, or lost. Many back country emergencies are preventable and even when bad things happen\, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. \nWilderness First Aid is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants more than basic level of first aid training for short trips with family\, friends\, and outdoor groups. The 16 hour long (two-day) program focuses on the skills of: Response and Assessment\, Musculoskeletal Injuries\, Environmental Emergencies\, Survival Skills\, Soft Tissue Injuries\, and Medical Emergencies. \nThose who complete the course and pass the written and practical skills will receive a Wilderness First Aid certification from SOLO which is valid for 2 years. SOLO is among the leaders in Wilderness Medicine Training and certification. Coffee and snacks will be provided each day. This course will be held at Wasserman Park in Merrimack\, NH. \nDue to COVID 19; we are capping class sizes to no more than 16 people. Classroom space will be setup to allow for students to remain 6ft apart during didactic lessons. \nFor practical work\, students are paired with one person\, and one person only. These people will work together during practical essions/assessments and otherwise will be expected to remain separated during class. The pair will remain the same from day one through day two. We will not be teaching group scenarios and will also only discuss certain components\, such as patient lifting and moving. \nParticipants are NOT required to hold a Valid CPR Certification Card\, but if you would like to get certified in Adult CPR ; a Course will be offered on Saturday evening for an additional fee of $45.00 \nSchedule \nSaturday 5/29 – 8:00AM – 5:00PM \nSunday 5/20 – 8:00AM – 5:00PM

SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid Training
DESCRIPTION:Do you like to spend time outdoors? Accidents happen; if you or someone in your group got hurt\, would you know what to do? People get hurt\, sick\, or lost. Many back country emergencies are preventable and even when bad things happen\, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. \nWilderness First Aid is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants more than basic level of first aid training for short trips with family\, friends\, and outdoor groups. The 16 hour long (two-day) program focuses on the skills of: Response and Assessment\, Musculoskeletal Injuries\, Environmental Emergencies\, Survival Skills\, Soft Tissue Injuries\, and Medical Emergencies. \nThose who complete the course and pass the written and practical skills will receive a Wilderness First Aid certification from SOLO which is valid for 2 years. SOLO is among the leaders in Wilderness Medicine Training and certification. Coffee and snacks will be provided each day. This course will be held at Wasserman Park in Merrimack\, NH. \nDue to COVID 19; we are capping class sizes to no more than 12 people. Classroom space will be setup to allow for students to remain 6ft apart during didactic lessons. For practical work\, students are paired with one person\, and one person only. These people will work together during practical sessions/assessments and otherwise will be expected to remain separated during class. The pair will remain the same from day one through day two. SUMMARY:Fall Seminar - All About Staffing
DESCRIPTION:Join ACA\, New England\, Kim Aycock\, Volunteer Co-Chair of ACA’s Project Real Job and owner of Camp 2 Campus Learning Solutions\, and researcher Daniel Shore for a day designed to dive deep into topics related to staffing! Our program will help you understand current trends and strategies in staffing \, explore staffing challenges and successes at camp with your colleagues\, and think about internships at camp. \n\n \nThank you\nto our seminar sponsor \nVital Camps\nCamp Orientation Online \n\n  \nWhether your camp is struggling with staffing or has been lucky in this area and wants to stay that way\, this day is for you! There will be time for learning\, information sharing\, and networking. The agenda will include: \n\nKeynote by Daniel Shore & Kim Aycock: Meet Staff Where They Are Rather than Where You Wish They Were – Unanswered emails. Requests (demands) for time-off. Over-involved parents. What’s the matter with young people today? Most likely nothing! We have more in common with this cohort of staff than one might think; their needs are just expressed differently. We have an opportunity to communicate that we are in touch with the times and yet have a handle on timeless wisdom. Thus\, we have to demonstrate that we understand the perspectives of those we hope to recruit\, hire\, and retain without compromising important vision\, values\, and views. Throughout this keynote session\, data and feedback gathered directly from staff will guide us to meeting them where they are rather than where we wish they were.\n\n\nAttendee-driven interactive think tank on key staffing-related topics that matter to camps led by Kim Aycock.\nSession and panel facilitated by Kim Aycock: Bringing interns to your camp  – What’s the difference between internships\, practicums\, and independent studies for students/camp staff and how do you think about integrating this into your camp’s planning. \n\nWho: Camp professionals involved in any aspect of staff recruitment\, hiring\, and retention – from directors to HR professionals and everyone in between! \nWhen: Wednesday\, October 30\, 2019\, 10:00 am – 3:30 pm \n\nPlease note that as of 10/18/19 there has been an update to the content and speakers for our morning keynote. We apologize for the change\, but are excited about this great new session we are offering! \n\n  \n \nParticipants will receive 5 Continuing Education Credits (CECs) for their full participation. \n\nAbout the Presenters\n \nKim Aycock\, MST\, has 30+ years of experience developing young people with skills robots are unable to do. While blending the talents of a master teacher with the knowledge of a seasoned camp expert\, Kim ignites the learning for varying levels of campers and staff worldwide. She has the ability to connect with and motivate learners of all ages through her interactive and innovative presentations. Kim speaks professionally at regional and national conferences\, presents webinars\, contributes regularly to Camping Magazine and ACA blogs\, and serves as Co-Chair of ACA’s Project Real Job Committee. More information can be found at: www.kimaycock.com. \n \nDaniel Shore is a researcher and consultant with an M.A. (and soon his PhD) in Workplace Psychology. He conducts research across numerous settings\, from cybersecurity teams to summer camps\, and turns data into action by (1) facilitating training experiences\, (2) conducting feedback focus groups and surveys\, and (3) creating professional development and training curricula. In the camp world\, Daniel combines his ten summers of experience that spanned from staff member to unit supervisor to director of staff and leadership development with his research expertise to help camps strategically train staff to enhance the camp staff experience.
