DESCRIPTION:The ACA New England New Camp Director Workshop\, or NCDW\, is specifically designed for camp directors with 4 years or less of camp administration experience.   In a small\, supportive atmosphere\, we will discuss the many tools needed for running a successful day or resident camp. Learn from the pros about everything from staff hiring to working with parents\, from dealing with children to handling the everyday situations and issues that are an inevitable part of your life at camp. DESCRIPTION:The Lifeguard Review Course is an abbreviated Lifeguarding course that briefly reviews course information and allows practice of skills and knowledge before testing. \nCurrent certification in Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is required to participate in the review course. \nStudents who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED which is valid for 2 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Information\n\nPrerequisites: Minimum age: 15 years; Swim 300 yards continuously; Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs; Complete a timed event within 1 minute\, 40 seconds by starting in the water\, swimming 20 yards\, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object\, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point\, exit the water without using steps or a ladder. \nParticipants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED\, valid for 2 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact Us\n\nQuestions? \nContact Elizabeth Snell \n781-541-6080 \nelizabeth@acanewengland.org

SUMMARY:Mental Health First Aid
DESCRIPTION:Mental Health First Aid \n(VIRTUAL COURSE: Self-paced pre-work and live virtual course) \nMental Health First Aid is a skills-based training course from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing that is designed to give you key skills to help an adult who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Whether you’re looking to support a colleague\, your camp counselors\, family and friends\, or other members of your community…this virtual course is for you. \nThis course is offered in a two-part format and both components must be completed to earn your certification: \n\n2 hours of virtual self-paced pre-work must be completed by Thursday\, February 23\n6-hour live\, instructor-led virtual course from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm on Tuesday\, February 28 (you must be fully present with the ability to have a camera and microphone on throughout the course)\n\nWhat will participants learn? MHFA Certification teaches participants to identify\, understand\, and respond to signs of mental health and substance abuse challenges among adults. You will learn: common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges; how to interact with a person in crisis how to connect a person with help and resources; ways to support a person thinking about suicide. \nParticipants do not learn to diagnose\, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling – rather\, participants learn to support an individual developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan. \nWho should take this course? The course is designed for anyone 18-years of age or older who would like to add to their toolbox for supporting folks with mental health concerns. This would be great for camp leaders to provide support to their adult staff members. This is a standalone certification\, but if you’re already certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid\, this complements that as well. \nAbout the instructor: \nEmily Golinksy\, is the Founder of Bright Moose\, LLC\, which provides training\, coaching\, consultation and professional development to camps\, organizations and individuals guided by the motto “Help Others Shine Bright!” Her professional background includes over two decades of year-round and summer camp leadership in both day and residential environments for children in crisis\, special needs youth\, and traditional campers\, including 15 years as Executive Director at Camp Starfish (NH). Emily is a regular presenter at conferences and is active in ACA\, New England\, where she is a Lead Visitor\, conference committee member\, and member of the Faculty for the New Camp Directors Workshop. Emily is on the Board of Directors for NHCamps and is a contributor to Camping Magazine\, ParentingNH\, the Project Real Job Blog\, and the Day Camp Pod. She holds a BS in Health Psychology and an MS in Camp Administration and Leadership. She is also an education advocate for youth with special needs and a certified Adult Mental Health First Aid Instructor. Emily’s sense of humor and genuine warm connection to individuals comes through in her facilitation style. He got his start in Camps at Camp Nashoba North in 1994 & has worked in many environments; therapeutic-adventure with Outward Bound\, Classroom-based with the Exeter Alternative High School\, and has been working with youth and adults as an educational consultant at The Browne Center as well as teaching at UNH since 2010. Jeff holds a B.S. in Outdoor Education and Psychology from UNH and an M.S. in Experiential Education from The University of Minnesota. When not at work\, Jeff spends as much time adventuring as possible: surfing\, kayaking\, SUPing\, backcountry snowboarding\, MTB and road biking\, and spending QT with his wife\, Steph and dog\, Salty. \n  \n\nAmy Boyd – Amy is the CEO and Founder of coaching service C.O.G.S. Connections\, and a qualified Level 7 Life Coach specialising in personal and professional development for adults and adolescents. All of our coaching frameworks are centred around Emotional Intelligence (EQ) to champion social emotional health and wellbeing. Amy is an international public speaker delivering topics to help others overcome limiting beliefs\, and adopting a positive mindset through EQ. She guides audiences to find their voice\, drawing on her system to support the development of EQ: ‘SEL S.E.E. M.E. Mind Mastery’ through awareness\, authenticity and the telling of anecdotes\, which incite courageous conversations to leave them with life-enhancing takeaways. \n\n\n\n\n\nDoug Sutherland – Originally from St. Louis\, MO\, Doug moved to New Hampshire to work directly with children and adults in the outdoors. His love of camp comes after family\, friends\, and building enriching communities. Actually\, this is pretty similar to camp. \n  \n  \n  \nElizabeth Snell – Elizabeth\, New England’s Director of Accreditation Services\, works with all things Accreditation and the New Camp Director Workshops. \nElizabeth grew up in Long Pond Pennsylvania. Starting as a camper at age 8\, she never left camp.  After a short time in Indiana\, she was very excited to come back east to work at ACA\, New England. \nElizabeth has a B.A. in English from Alvernia College\, MS.Ed in Sport Management from East Stroudsburg University and a Masters in Camp Administration from Indiana University. \n  \n  \n \nAmelia Luke – If you call the ACA\, New England office\, you’ll likely hear Amelia’s friendly voice on the other end. However\, as ACA New England’s Operations Coordinator\, you can think of her as a Jane of all trades\, dabbling in many of the projects that the team works on. Amelia’s camp experience began at age 4 when she attended Wanakee in Meredith\, New Hampshire for the first time– she hasn’t looked back since. Amelia attended camp every summer after and served five summers on staff at Wanakee in varying roles from Counselor to Operations Director. \nHer passion for camp is\, in part\, what inspired her to pursue a Masters in Public Administration at the University of Vermont\, after earning her B.S. in Public Communications there.

The course covers: \n\nCommon signs and symptoms of mental health challenges and substance use challenges in this age group.\nHow to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis.\nHow to connect the youth with help.\nExpanded content on trauma\, substance use\, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying.\n\nThis course is offered in a two-part format and both components must be completed to earn your certification: \n\n2.5 hours of pre-work must be completed by Thursday\, March 28\n5.5 hour live\, virtual course from 9:00 am – 2:30 pm on Monday\, April 1\n\nWhat will participants learn? This course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents\, including anxiety\, depression\, psychosis\, eating disorders\, AD/HD\, disruptive behavior disorders\, and substance use disorder. \nParticipants do not learn to diagnose\, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling – rather\, participants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan. The Youth Mental Health First Aid USA curriculum is primarily focused on information participants can use to help adolescents and transition-age youth\, ages 8-18. \nWho should take this course? The course is designed for any adults who regularly interact with adolescents who are ACA\, New England members or who work at camps located in Western Massachusetts. *We are able to provide this course free of charge to ACA\, New England members thanks to a SAMHSA grant.* \nWho created the course? Who created the course? The National Council for Mental Wellbeing was instrumental in bringing Mental Health First Aid to the U.S. Mental Health First Aid USA worked with experts at the National Technical Assistance Center for Children’s Mental Health at the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development to develop the youth program. \nMental Health First Aid Instructors through Mental Health First Aid:  \n\nKayla Crowe\nJoanne Dreher\n\nThis course is FREE for ACA\, New England members and folks who work at camps in Western Massachusetts. You MUST register by March 6 and complete your pre-work completion by March 28 receive access to the live virtual course on April. \n*Because this course results in a certification\, attendees must fully participate in the entire program.* \nSpace is limited to 30 participants! \nRegister: As of 3/8/24 this course is FULL and cannot accept any additional registrations.
