The 2011 Camp Champions Celebration Allows More Than 100 Children to Attend Summer Camp

One hundred and seven children will experience the joy of day or overnight camp this summer thanks to the American Camp Association, New England Campership Fund! Sixty-five ACA Accredited day and overnight camps across all six New England states were just informed of the campership funds they will receive on behalf of specific campers. The first-ever Camp Champions Celebration held at Fenway Park last fall raised the funds that will make summer camp experiences possible for more than 100 lucky campers. The funds for each camper will go directly to each of the 64 camps.

Bette Bussel, Executive Director of ACA New England, notes that campers receiving camperships will attend an array of summer camps representing the tremendous variety of camp opportunities available in all six New England states—day and overnight, private and agency, religiously-affiliated and nonsectarian. “At ACA New England, we believe there’s a camp out there for everyone and that every child deserves to have a camp experience. ACA Accredited camps applied for campership funding on behalf of qualified campers, who met eligibility guidelines for the federal free and reduced lunch program. The recipients of these camperships are some of New England’s most underserved children.”

Ed Pletman, Director of Informal Education for  Combined Jewish Philanthropies, Greater Boston’s Jewish Federation, serves as the chair of the Campership Fund Committee for ACA New England. “The Campership Fund Committee is very grateful to the supporters of the Camp Champions event. We’re very excited that the funding that was raised will enable the campership fund to help send more than 100 children to camp this summer at 64 different ACA accredited camps in New England. We know that these campers will have incredibly fun and powerful experiences at their camps this summer.”

Plans are already underway for the second Camp Champions Celebration. Hundreds of supporters will gather in Fenway Park’s State Street Pavilion the evening of November 1st to raise campership funds for the summer of 2013 as the Honorable Mayor Thomas M. Menino of Boston receives ACA New England’s Camp Champions Award for his significant support of New England’s summer camp world. Access information and other Camp Champions event details.
