We had a wonderful meeting in Manchester at the ACA New England conference.  Just prior to our meeting Jeremy Plane of Camp Abnaki agreed to become the new secretary for Vermont Camping Association– we welcome him and thank him for taking on this position.  Marnie McDonagh reported that we are doing well regarding our membership for this year and that “there is money in the bank.”  Items of new business included deciding to do some research on hiring a Legislative Monitor.  Jon Kuypers has agreed to gather information before our Fall meeting when we might be ready to make a decision.  This is the route several other New England states have taken to keep on top of legislation that might affect our camps. At the suggestion of our February speaker on marketing, Kat Hood has agreed to monitor the hits on our website and also create some links to other Vermont tourism sites.  We also agreed to offer student memberships to VCA at a rate of $10.00 a year.  They will be invited to meetings and will be able to connect to our members.  This idea came in part from the major in camp management being offered at Green Mountain College under the direction of Thayer Raines and their club for majors.

For the first time in many years we presented three Service Awards and one Lifetime Award to members of VCA.  Brandon Bergey was awarded a Service Award for his tireless work on our new website, Sandy Valine, outgoing VCA Secretary, was also thanked for her service to VCA, as was Jon Kuypers, past-president of VCA.  Candice “Corc” Raines was honored with a Lifetime Award for her many, many years of dedicated work in marketing the VCA, first in print and now through her ongoing work maintaining our website, to say nothing of her fabulous hosting of our winter Board Meetings.  We made clear that in receiving this award it in no way meant that we want or expect her to retire!  We give our heartfelt thanks to all four of our award recipients- Congratulations!

We are looking forward to our next gathering in the Fall – Jon Hammond of Hosmer Point Camp has offered to host us in early October – we’ll be in touch with the details later this spring so you can save the date.
