In Memoriam - December 2019

December, 2019 saw the loss of three exceptional members of our Association. These dedicated individuals touched the lives of countless youth in New England and beyond through their passion for excellent camping experiences. Our thoughts are we with their families, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.


Ed M. Andrews, 87, from Lexington, MA and Orono, ME passed away peacefully on November 4th, 2019 in Palo Alto, CA surrounded by his family after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He is remembered for his integrity and calm demeanor. Ed loved to feed his friends so in his honor there will be two celebrations followed by lunch. Saturday June 6th, 2020 - 10:30 am in the Memorial Chapel at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina and Saturday June 13th, 2020 - 10:30 am in the Pines at Alford Lake Camp, South Hope, Maine.

Michael "Mik" Monti, 58, died unexpectedly December 3, 2019. He was Born on April 18, 1961. Mik touched countless lives in his work as a cook and food service director at Camp Jewell and Chimney Corners Camp. He showed his care and love for others through providing food, conversation, laughs, advice and comfort to those who needed it. A ceremony to celebrate Mik's life and all of the relationships that he developed with this community will be held at St. Ann Church, 134 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240 on Saturday, December 14 at 10 a.m. Reception to follow at the Church Hall. All are welcome.

Michelle S. Ordway died peacefully at her home due to complications from breast cancer on Dec. 7, 2019. She was 75.

Born and raised in Albany, N.Y., Michelle was the fourth and youngest child of immigrants, Anthony Sroka from Poland, who worked as a civil servant for New York, and Suzanne Gaidier Sroka from France, a university professor of languages. Michelle graduated from the Albany Academy for Girls and Vassar College. At age 20, just before her sister’s wedding, Michelle was asked to pick up the groom’s college roommate, Alan B. Ordway, at the train station. The rest, she liked to say, is history. A celebration of life will be held at Winona Camps, June 2020.
