Over 200 Children to Experience the Joy of Summer Camp in 2014 through American Camp Association, New England’s Campership Fund
Funds Give Children in Need the Chance to Attend Local Summer Camps
The American Camp Association, New England (ACA New England) is pleased to announce that 217 campers have been offered the chance to attend camp this summer. Ninety-eight ACA-Accredited camps New England-wide received campership funding on behalf of specific campers to help support these children in need, all whom ranged between the ages of 6-16. 118 camperships for day camp and 99 camperships for overnight camp were offered for the coming summer.
ACA New England’s Campership Fund will serve 40% more campers than during the summer of 2013.These camperships were a result of fundraising efforts from the 2013 Camp Champions Celebration, which honored actress and camp activist, Eliza Dushku.
Now in its 4th year, the Camp Champions Celebration will take place on Friday, November 21st at Fenway Park’s State Street Pavilion. The 2014 celebration will honor Anna Gould for her extraordinary work developing a program for the families of children with life-threatening illnesses at ACA-Accredited Camp Sunshine at Sebago Lake in Maine. Gould will be recognized for her camp philanthropy and commitment to spreading the message of the importance of summer camp in a young person’s life. Camp Sunshine is a year-round retreat, to provide respite, support, joy, and hope to children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families through various stages of the child’s illness. The program is free of charge to all families, and includes 24-hour onsite medical and psychosocial support.
“At ACA New England, we believe there is a camp for everyone and that all children deserve the chance to have a summer camp experience,” said Bette Bussel, Executive Director of ACA New England. Through the ACA New England Campership Fund, campers have the opportunity to attend every type of ACA accredited camp available in all six New England states: day and overnight, traditional general and specialty (from computer programming to outdoor wilderness to sports to fine and performing arts, and so much more. The true spirit of our Campership Fund is about providing campership for children in need… because camp is for everyone.”
