Job Description

The Summer Wilderness Trip Coordinator (SWTC) has the oversight of all summer wilderness programming at Chewonki. This position is part of the Chewonki Summer Team that includes the Vice President, Director of Girls Programs, and Director of Camp for Boys. The Summer Wilderness Trip Coordinator is supervised by the Vice President and receives direction from the Boys and Girls Camp Directors to align wilderness trips with the summer program vision as outlined by these directors. Like all positions at Chewonki, the SWTC must collaborate with program and department leaders to identify opportunities to simplify and improve systems.

KEY OBJECTIVES Continue and bolster Chewonki’s reputation as a leading outdoor organization in the Northeast by managing and delivering a top quality wilderness program. Working with summer camp directors and director of communication and marketing to meet enrollment goals by generating new participant leads, increasing the conversation rate from in-camp participant to wilderness trip participant, and increase retention for multiple extended trips. Work with the summer team to recruit, train, and retain excellent trip leading staff who believe in the Chewonki mission, have a team-first attitude, and bring entrepreneurial energy to their work. Work with the summer program directors and Outdoor Classroom leadership on summer placement of Outdoor Classroom Staff. Contribute to the development of an in-camp outdoor skills progression that will prepare campers for their trips over time. Collaborate with camp leadership to align, simplify, and integrate in-camp and trip activities for a seamless progression from ages 8 to 18. Follow Chewonki field protocols and procedures for all wilderness programming Provide quality training for trip leaders in conjunction with program directors Advise and act as a resource to the Director of Girls Programs and the Boys Camp Director to ensure that Chewonki’s outdoor/wilderness experiences utilize market research to meet market demand while staying true to Chewonki’s mission. This may include consideration of programs of varying lengths, different elements, and alternative locations. Provide strong leadership and serve as an exemplary role model for staff and participants Maintain positive relationships with Chewonki program directors and staff Provide explementary customer service to both our participants, their families, and coworkers.
