Position Description: SPORTS DIRECTOR

Minimum Qualifications

  • Training and experience in leading physical education or athletic programs for youth 
  • Knowledge of current best practices in the field of physical education
  • Demonstrated experience in managing, training, evaluating, and supervising staff Ability to accept guidance and supervision
  • Enthusiasm, patience, flexibility, self-control, and sense of humor 
  • College graduate of at least 25 years of age

Responsible to: Assistant Camp Director

General Responsibility

  • Oversee all aspects of Beaver’s sports programs including activities, staff, budget, facilities, and equipment.
  • Lead sports programming that serves to encourage, inspire, and deepen campers’ appreciation of sports and encourage active participation by all campers in sports activities.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Supervise all sports activity specialists Lead a comprehensive pre-season staff training that effectively prepares all sports program staff for the summer season
  • Conduct an effective performance evaluation process for all sports staff
  • Develop engaging, varied, and age-appropriate curriculum for all sports activities
  • Enforce appropriate safety guidelines and emergency procedures
  • Teach, as needed, and monitor proper use of equipment and maintain equipment in good working condition
  • Actively lead sports activities along with other sports specialists
  • Conduct initial, daily, and end-of-season check of equipment safety, cleanliness and good repair Work within set budget and maintain responsibility for program cash and expenses
  • Compile a written equipment and supplies inventory at the end of the season
  • Complete a thorough end-of-season program evaluation including recommendations for the following year regarding equipment, staffing, scheduling, enrollment, red flag campers, marketing, etc. 
  • Ensure that all equipment and supplies are stored for the off-season in an organized manner 
  • Practice discretion at all times in conversations with campers and other staff 
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned by the Assistant Director or Director

Essential Functions

  • Ability to communicate and work with other staff and provide necessary instruction to campers
  • Abilities to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Cognitive and communication abilities to plan and conduct the activity to achieve camper development objectives
  • Ability to work with different age and skill levels 
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to activities
  • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers while engaging in athletic activities
