Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Take primary responsibility for the health, well-being and happiness of campers in group. 
  • Take lead in creating a positive group environment working with coworkers and superiors. 
  • Uphold all policies and philosophies of the Fessenden Day Camp. 
  • Actively participate in all aspects of the campers’ day and assist specialists at activities. 
  • Develop a relationship with each camper in group and learn their needs.
  • Recognize and respond to opportunities for group problem solving.
  • Encourage respect for self, others, personal property, and camp equipment and facilities. 
  • Set a good example for junior counselor(s), campers, and coworkers in all areas, including accountability, organization, cleanliness, punctuality, following the rules, and sportsmanship. 
  • Guide junior counselor(s), CITs, and campers in participating successfully and appropriately in all aspects of camp activities.
  • Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures and apply appropriate positive behavior management techniques.
  • Meet/communicate regularly with direct superior (administrator) regarding concerns, updates, challenges, and successes. 
  • Ability to communicate with parents about their child when necessary and appropriate.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in training and meetings before and during camp season.
  • Available 8:45am-4:00pm, Monday – Friday for the entire camp season (all 8 weeks) and to attend all staff training sessions before and during camp season. There will also be one day each session you will be required to stay late for either the Overday (Lower Camp) or Overnight (Upper Camp).

Physical Demands:

  • High activity which may include dancing, running, swimming, and jumping. 
  • Occasional lifting, bending, and climbing stairs.
  • Frequent talking, listening, walking, sitting, and standing. 
  • Ability to reasonably participate in all activities in the camper’s day.

Requirements

  • Completed one year of college or one year out of high school, at least 18 years of age. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with and leading children.
  • Pass a MA State run background check including a CORI and SORI.

Experience

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience working with and leading children.
  • Ability to teach and lead various recreational activities.
  • Ability to communicate and work with a variety of age and skill levels. 
  • Desire and ability to supervise, lead, and positively manage campers and work with other staff in a cooperative, team-oriented camp atmosphere.
  • Possess excellent character, integrity, adaptability, patience, self-control, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.
