The Berkshire Outdoor Center is excited to announce a unique opening for a Program Coordinator / Day Camp Director in 2020! Located over 1400 forested acres in the beautiful Berkshire mountains of Western Massachusetts, the Berkshire Outdoor Center (BOC) serves approximately 15,000 guests per year through a wide-range of year-round programs for individuals, families and groups, including the Becket Day Camp. The Berkshire Outdoor Center is part of over a century of tradition in outdoor camping programs at the Becket Chimney Corners YMCA, also operating the Camp Becket for boys and Chimney Corners Camp for girls, and the Travel & Service Programs.
Becket Day Camp (Day Camp Director): The Program Coordinator/ Day Camp Director is responsible for creating, leading and managing staff and camper activities daily for approximately 300 unique campers aged 3-17 for 8 weeks in the summer. The Day Camp Director is also responsible for pre-camp training and on-going coaching for staff and counselors to effectively deliver a safe, fun, and nurturing environment that facilitates a positive camp culture focusing on campers’ growth in social emotional learning. The Day Camp Director will work in conjunction with the BOC Assistant Director, and Executive Director to develop and implement training programs, ongoing in-services, and adherence to American Camping Association standards, YUSA standards, & Dept. of Public Health regulations. The BDC Director is responsible for supervising all aspects of the BDC experience, including bus transportation, arrivals and departures, activities, lunch, swimming & waterfront, hiking, and free time activities. A supportive leadership team will include a BDC Assistant Director, Waterfront Director, Nurse, Logistics Coordinator, Activities Coordinator, and approx. 12-16 camp counselors/ lifeguards who will report to and support the BDC in delivering Becket Day Camp programs. This position will report to the BOC Assistant Director and Executive Director.
Berkshire Outdoor Center Year-Round Day Camps and Programs (Program Coordinator): In the months outside of the Becket Day Camp programs the Program Coordinator/ Day Camp Director will support the Berkshire Outdoor Center programs as a Program Coordinator. A program coordinator will schedule and plan programs, staff, and resources for all groups. Act as a primary liaison for groups and facilitate a wide range of programming as needed which include: high ropes course & teambuilding initiatives, outdoor and environmental education, family camps, retreats, and weddings. Program Coordinators directly communicate with lead contacts at schools, colleges, specialty groups, etc. to effectively plan and deliver program expectations for all groups during an assigned week, which can peak at nearly 1000 participants. Coordinators also serve as a primary contact in the BOC on-call / emergency response plans.

- Aged 21 or older with at least 2 years in a leadership role in a similar context, preferably day camp setting.
- Have a bachelor’s degree in education, recreation, or related field.
- Have a valid driver’s license and become an approved BCCYMCA driver.
- Able to work with staff and children in the outdoors, in varying weather conditions, administering and participating in all typical BDC/ BOC activities, some of which may be physically demanding.
- Have excellent communication and organizational skills, confidence and willingness to interact in a positive and motivational manner with peers and guests.
- Be flexible, patient, have strong initiative and be a customer service oriented problem solver.
Position Availability and Dates: We are now accepting rolling applications for the full-time Program Coordinator / Day Camp Director position with a flexible start in early 2020. Seasonally available applicants who wish to apply to only be the Becket Day Camp Director from late May through late August will also be considered for applicants wishing to return as a Becket Day Camp Director for several seasons.
