Job Description

SPECIFIC DUTIES:
1. Perform life guarding duties for campers free swim period
a. Assist in getting the campers lined up so wrist bands can be issued
b. Assist in counting each camper that is entering the water making sure they all have a wrist band, confirming final count with bin members and bin director
c. Be on the dock before campers enter the water for free swim
d. Scan water at all times ensuring the safety of campers and staff
e. Participate in buddy check with swim area director helping campers get out of the water, lined up and counted (confirm number with bin director)
f. Be alert at all times and prepared to do lost swimmer search and rescue
g. Dress in approved Hale Reservation life guarding attire, no shoes/sneakers on dock

2. Assist in swim instruction for a variety of age groups if necessary
a. If deemed necessary by supervisors helps implement the Red Cross swim program under supervision of Water Safety Instructor

3. Assist in the organization and supervision of special events and games
a. Assist in helping keep events organized and running safely and orderly
b. Organize an end of the lesson activity to reward campers for their behavior
c. Ensure that events and games meet Hale Reservation safety regulations

4. Participation in the general upkeep and maintenance of the area (whole waterfront area, parking lot, trails, beach, hill, bathrooms, etc.)
a. Participate in all cleaning duties
b. Waters edge must be raked in the morning before campers arrive and at end of day after campers depart (minimum of 3’ from waters edge)
c. Trash must be picked up from the beach and hill area continuously throughout the day and emptied into the dumpster at the completion of the day
d. Bathrooms must be cleaned in the morning before campers arrive and at the completion of the day after campers depart. Also, men’s and ladies room must be cleaned and sanitized periodically throughout the day. e. General cleanliness of parking area for guards and general public must be maintained throughout the day f. Dock area must be cleaned prior to campers arrival

5. Assist in distribution of all safety equipment at the beginning and end of each day
a. Equipment must be distributed to the proper locations prior to campers arrival at the beach each morning b. Equipment must be inspected daily to ensure that it is in perfect condition
c. Phone must be plugged and working prior to campers arrival
d. Swimming area is to be checked for hazards prior to campers arrival each morning and continuously throughout the day

6. Participate in in-service training throughout the summer
a. Perform lost bather drills, back boarding, CPR, first aid, and general rescue techniques at the discretion of the agency aquatics director
b. Swim 500 yards a minimum of 2 times a week
c. Maintain personal health throughout the summer

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
Able to observe, listen to, evaluate and act upon safety concerns related to a large beach operation  Able to easily access all areas of Hale Reservation by foot
Able to appropriately address camper and Agency camp issues in person and on the phone
Able to physically assist with facility upkeep at beach area

Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Minimum age: 16 
  • Able to handle diverse tasks
  • Ability to professionally represent Hale Reservation in person
  • Flexible, dependable, friendly, cooperative member of the team 
  • Current Lifeguard, C.P.R., and First Aid Certification
