Essential Job Functions
The role of the Lead Camp Counselor is to help the Education Program Coordinator plan, prep, and execute all camp activities, crafts, games, animal encounters, tours through the Zoo, before and after care and all other aspects of camp. This role will be involved in running camp’s after care program alongside co-counselors. This applicant must be willing to lead and work well with all other counselors, interns, and the Education Program Coordinator and other departments, including Animal Management and Admissions.

Duties & Responsibilities
1. Assist in conducting summer camp for ages 6-13
2. Assist in before care and lead after care program for campers
3. Help in preparing and creating activities and crafts before and during camp
4. Learn about the animal collection at Franklin Park Zoo to be able to better teach campers
5. Be able to take what they have learned about the Zoo, its animals, and interpretation to help teach the other counselors
6. Be able to fill in for the Education Program Coordinator when needed
7. Work closely with Education volunteers and interns
8. Assume other duties as assigned by the Education Program Coordinator

Minimum Job Requirements
1. Must be 18 years or older
2. Available to work 40 hours per week (8 hours/day)
3. Ability to address audiences of all ages
4. Outstanding customer service skills, both internal and external
5. Ability to provide excellent customer service to ZNE customers, clients, and employees
6. Excellent oral presentation skills
7. Ability to work independently as well as in a team
8. A strong desire to deliver ZNE’s messages, mission, and goals to our visitors
9. Reliable transportation to and from work
10. Willingness to spend long periods of time outdoors
11. Ability to lift 50 pounds and walk over uneven terrain
12. Previous experience working with children
13. Ability to work with children of all ages

Preferred Job Requirements
1. Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental studies or a related field
2. Previous camp experience as a counselor or as part of leadership staff
3. Previous experience working with multiple age groups
4. Previous experience with children in an educational setting
5. Previous experience working with teens in a professional setting
6. Previous experience in an animal field
7. Current CPR / First Aid certification
8. Experience in a leadership position
9. Bilingual

Hours, Location, and Term of Appointment
Hours: Camp runs from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm with before and after care from 7:30 am – 5:30 pm, 5 days/week, Monday – Friday. The Lead Counselor will be expected to work a shift from 9:00 am – 5:30 pm, with additional hours in the morning or evening as needed for a minimum of 40 hours per week. Final schedule will be set prior to start date.
