Lead Camp Counselor - Zoo New England (Stone Zoo)

Essential Job Functions
The role of the Lead Camp Counselor is to help the Camp Director plan, prep, and execute all camp activities, crafts, games, animal encounters, tours through the Zoo, before and after care and all other aspects of camp. This role will be involved in running before and aftercare alongside co-counselors. This applicant must be willing to lead and work well with all other counselors, interns, the Director and other departments, including Animal Care and Guest Services. 

Duties & Responsibilities
1. Assist in conducting summer camp for ages 3-13
2. Assist in before and after care for campers
3. Help in preparing and creating activities and crafts before and during camp months
4. Learn about the animal collection at Stone Zoo to be able to better teach campers and guests
5. Learn how to handle some of our program animals and be able to do so for encounters for camp and/or visitors
6. Being able to take what they have learned about the Zoo, its animals, and interpretation to help teach the other counselors
7. Ability to fill in for the Director when needed
8. Work closely with Education volunteers and interpreters
9. Assume other duties as assigned by the Education Program Manager

Minimum Job Requirements
1. Must be 18 years or older
2. Available to work 40 hours per week (8 hours/day)
3. A background in environmental studies or a related field
4. Outstanding customer service skills, both internal and external
5. Ability to provide excellent customer service to ZNE customers, clients, and employees
6. Excellent oral presentation skills
7. Ability to work independently as well as in a team
8. A strong desire to deliver ZNE’s messages, mission, and goals to our visitors
9. Reliable transportation to and from work
10. Willingness to spend long periods of time outdoors
11. Ability to lift 50 pounds and walk over uneven terrain
12. Previous experience working with children
13. Ability to work with children of all ages
14. Willingness to learn how to handle Stone Zoo program animals

Preferred Job Requirements
1. Previous camp experience as a counselor
2. Previous experience working with multiple age groups
3. Previous experience with children in an educational setting
4. Previous experience in the animal field
5. Experience in a leadership position
6. Bilingual

Hours, Location, and Term of Appointment
Hours: 8:30am-4:30pm., 5 days/week, Monday – Friday.
Location: Stone Zoo
Term: maximum of 14.5 weeks, June 10 – August 23
