Challenge Course Director - Beaver Summer Camp


Job Description

General Responsibility: Plan, direct, and supervise the Adventure/Challenge program, ensuring the overall success of the program through camper safety, effective curriculum design, and implementation and evaluation.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of pre-season Adventure/Challenge preparation including, but not limited to, planning and conducting staff training in technical skills, crisis management, and safety policies, etc. 
  • Assist as needed in recruiting and interviewing Adventure/Challenge staff
  • Keep attendance records on all staff, conduct individual evaluations of staff twice per season, and assist with staff development where possible
  • Assure compliance with all state regulations as outlined under license from the Department of Public Safety • Follow all national standards applicable to challenge course use; enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures
  • Teach, as needed, and monitor proper use of equipment and maintain equipment in good working condition
  • Conduct initial, daily, and end-of-season check of equipment safety, cleanliness and good repair
  • Maintain required records and documentation of all equipment as outlined by the MA Dept. of Public Safety 
  • Ensure that all equipment and supplies are stored for the off-season in an organized manner
  • Document thoroughly all camper behaviors which violate camp policy as outlined in the parent handbook and handle parent issues as needed
  • Work within set budget and maintain responsibility for program cash and expenses 
  • Compile a written equipment and supplies inventory at the end of the season 
  • Complete a thorough end-of-season program evaluation including recommendations for the following year regarding equipment, staffing, scheduling, enrollment, red flag campers, marketing, etc. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to communicate and work with other staff and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff 
  • Abilities to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Cognitive and communication abilities to plan and conduct the activities to achieve camper development objectives 
  • Ability to work with different age and skill levels 
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to activities 
  • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers


  • Training, certification, and teaching experience in challenge course activities
  • Ability to effectively train and supervise staff in challenge course activities 
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in the outdoors 
  • Ability to relate well to his/her peers 
  • Ability and experience in supervising staff and campers 
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision 
  • Good character, integrity and adaptability 
  • Enthusiasm, patience, self-control and sense of humor 
  • College graduate of at least 21 years of age
