Job Description

Chewonki is seeking a motivated and motivating professional who is excited to work with and contribute to a dynamic team of camp professionals to create an aligned model of summer programming that equitably supports, challenges, and encourages participants to be their best selves, foster stewardship of the natural world, and build sustainable communities throughout their lives.

Reporting to the Vice President for Camp Chewonki and in collaboration with other year-round camp leadership, the Camp Directors lead and manage the Camp Chewonki education and experience for campers, parents, and staff. The director(s) seek continuous improvement of program(s) to ensure high retention of campers and staff and strive to strengthen all of Chewonki through their efforts. The Camp Director will possess the level of experience necessary to provide leadership to their respective camp program while concurrently partnering with other summer team members to implement the vision of "One Chewonki" throughout all summer offerings.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES With the direction of VP for Camp Chewonki: Creates an active partnership and collaborative environment within Camp Chewonki which ensures: integrated and equitable summer programs for all; curriculum and programming that is coherent,  mission-driven, and is true to the vision of aligned summer programming Serves as the primary point of contact for camp families Works closely with the VP for Camp Chewonki to meet annual enrollment targets to include creating and participating in a collaborative marketing strategy participating in local and national recruiting events robust seasonal evaluation of financial and enrollment targets Supports and contributes to the work of the VP for Camp Chewonki Develops and manages a departmental budget to meet the goals of Camp Chewonki and Chewonki as a whole Hires and builds a strong, seasonal staff in alignment with the vision and expectations for all of Camp Chewonki Maintains the highest standards for behavior by staff and campers Promotes and Chewonki Mission. Actively develops understanding, skills,  and leadership in single-gender education. Participates in development activity to support the VP for Camp Chewonki and Director of Development. Provides professional feedback for year-round and seasonal staff

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Maintain a general understanding of all Chewonki programs Participate in community lunches, dish crews, special events, and community workdays Be an active member of American Camp Association and Maine Summer Camps Attend conferences and seminars as appropriate to position

Experience

QUALIFICATIONS Excited about creating and delivering an educational, aligned, and fun model of camp that supports and encourages girls and boys equitably Good listener Clear communicator Proficient in use of Gmail, Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, etc), and Google Apps for Education. Values and is capable of receiving and offering honest and timely feedback Comfortable public speaking to and with a variety of audiences Excited about an educational, aligned model that supports and encourages girls and boys equitably Experience leading wilderness trips Understands the model and value of outdoor learning and place-based education Familiarity with Camp and the Camp profession Bachelor’s degree Ability to take responsibility for decisions Committed to excellence

SALARY AND BENEFITS Salary is in line with other residential summer camps in northern New England.  Benefits include; health insurance, life insurance, dental insurance, optional vision insurance, long-term disability, 403B retirement plan (currently matching up to 4.5% after one year of service), paid time off and access to professional development funds.
