Job Description


Hale is a private, non-profit educational organization that manages over 1,130 acres of woodlands, including four ponds and over twenty miles of trails in Westwood and Dover, Massachusetts. Hale is most widely recognized for its summer day camp programs which annually serve over 4,400 children from over 70 communities in the Greater Boston area. In addition, Hale’s operations consist of a family beach program, outdoor environmental education for children and adults, and open space for casual recreational use.

The essence of Hale can be found in Robert Sever Hale’s original desires for the organization he began in 1918. The current programs and land management practices are the legacy of his wish “to provide education which will develop intelligent, capable and responsible citizens” and to use the land “so long as it is charitable and benevolent in nature.” Today’s programs strive to develop intelligent leaders and educated environmental citizens. We also believe that the diversity of the natural environment must be reflected back in the diversity of the people who experience our programs. Therefore, we strive to provide programs and opportunities, for people of any race, background, religion or economic status.

Hale operates one of the largest day camp programs in the country, averaging over 2,000 campers per day during the summer months. The day camps consist of 7 partner camps and 2 Hale-run camp programs, and utilize two ponds and two challenge courses for programming.


Reporting to the Director of Operations and working closely with the Program Team, Boston Public Schools, Boston Afterschool & Beyond and Partner Camp Directors, the Camp Administrator is responsible to the planning and implementation of the Hale Outdoor Learning Adventures (HOLA) and the Partner Camp program. The Camp Administrator shall be an example of organization, planning and partnership.


  • Serve as Administrator for Partner Camp Programs
    • Responsible for the coordination of all required paperwork and preparation involved in running a successful summer camp program including, but not limited to:
      • Oversee and manage staff hiring
      • Oversee and manage annual DPH licensing
      • Oversee and coordinate pre-summer staff training
      • Assist in the development and manage execution of the annual budget
      • Create program schedules for all partner camps
      • Lead regular school-year meetings with Partner Camp Directors and other guests, where appropriate
    • In collaboration with Seasonal Directors, ensure that year-end Director’s Report is completed
  • Serve as Administrator of Hale Outdoor Learning Adventures (HOLA)
    • Ensure that target enrollment goals are fulfilled
    • Oversee and manage evaluation process
    • Coordinate special events and off season trips
    • Manage Boston Public Schools (BPS) and Boston Afterschool and Beyond (BASB) relationships
    • In collaboration with Seasonal Director, ensure that year-end Director’s Report is completed
  • Coordinate with Marketing Director to develop comprehensive marketing plan to be implemented throughout the year

The ideal candidate is expected to perform the responsibilities listed above to high standards. The following list is representative of the knowledge, skill and ability required:

  • A bachelor’s degree or similar education accomplishments
  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated and successful experience in camp management
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a supervisory role
  • Flexible, dependable, positive, cooperative member of the team
  • Self-motivated leader, with the ability to coordinate multiple working projects over the course of the year
  • Experience with various computer programs and databases, in particular Microsoft Office, and ability to learn new programs
  • Knowledge of and experience with American Camping Association (ACA) standards a plus
  • Ability to work under pressure, while being organized and managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to think analytically and strategically
  • Ability to develop proposals, RFP’s, presentation materials and other written materials
  • Excellent communication skills orally and in writing
  • Ability to travel throughout property as needed and sit for prolonged periods of time working at a computer
