Agencies and camps that primarily serve the most economically disadvantaged communities know just how detrimental not hosting camp - day or overnight - will be to the people they serve. Not only do our camps provide opportunities for social growth, independence, and physical activity, we also know that when we begin discussing the possibility of not hosting our camps, our youth may not have access to their basic needs. Many campers rely on our camps for food, clothes, and sometimes safety from dangerous neighborhoods and homes. While many camps are discussing virtual camp programs, we know that may not work well for our kids, nor does it address the need to continue serving as a food program site and provide other basic necessities.
We are calling all camp pros who primarily serve economically disadvantaged youth and communities to become part of a conversation on addressing how we can still provide these life saving services in alternative ways - in or out of the camp setting. ACA Illinois is hosting a conversation open to anyone - no matter where in the world, on how we can continue to provide for our youth while also following the requirements of the public health departments and leadership from our local areas.
This will be a THREE-PART Series:
Part I: Alternative Ways to Provide Service | Monday, May 4
This conversation will be for those that have already determined or are considering that they are unable to host camp or want to be prepared for alternative ways to provide services. This group will discuss how to provide support and programs in alternative ways with knowledge that virtual programming won’t reach everyone equitably.
This group will be discussing how to adapt or change their camp in order to meet social distancing, small groups, and health & safety guidelines that may be very costly or hard to reach. This group can discuss topics such as transportation, staffing, budgets, and other unique situations for camps. This conversation will focus on the day camp experience.
Part III: Still Determining if We Can Host Camp & How to do That at Resident Camps | Wednesday, May 6
This group will be discussing how to adapt or change their camp in order to meet social distancing, small groups, and health & safety guidelines that may be very costly or hard to reach. This group can discuss topics such as transportation, staffing, budgets, and other unique situations for camps. This conversation will focus on the resident camp experience.
What This Is: This is a facilitated conversation to draw out ideas and strengthen our collective effort to be sure we serve our young people this summer. We are seeking people who want to be part of the conversation and engage in developing and sharing ideas and innovations.
