If She Can Be a Boy, Why Can’t I? Policies and Best Practices
for Supporting Transgender Campers and Staff
Where our culture was with sexual orientation a decade or two ago is where we are today with gender identity. There is an increased awareness that someone’s gender identity is not always consistent with the person’s biological sex, but this is still a new concept for many of us, and there are often questions: Where do I house a camper who came to camp last year as a girl and this year a boy? If I house this camper with the boys, should I inform the parents of the campers in the cabin? How about campers who identify as gender-fluid and want to be referred to as they? If someone is transgender, does that mean that they’re gay? Jeff will answer these questions and more. Returning from presenting at last year’s ACA New England Conference and this year’s ACA National and Tri-State CAMP Conferences, Jeff will discuss terminology, policies, and best practices for supporting transgender campers and staff, incorporating video clips and first-person accounts of campers, parents, and camp directors into his presentation.
Opening Session - Thursday, March 31, 8:00 - 8:45am

He will present an upfront and compelling keynote on the state of the camp industry and how he sees the future of ACA and this impactful experience. Tom’s keynote will engage as it has developed out of ACA’s current research. Additionally, he will share stories, based on his life as a camp director, to discuss the current state of our industry, the strategic direction of our board and the future of camping.
