Our 2014 Honoree:
ANNA GOULD, CAMP PHILANTHROPIST
Thirty years ago, Anna Gould of Bedford, MA and Casco, ME, heard a young boy interviewed in a news story about his cancer. She felt she needed to help. And she did. Her response—as a business person and parent of an overnight camper—was to offer the most wonderful of gifts: a week of camp. She established and offered a week of camp for children with life-threatening diseases and their families at the family resort she co-owned, Point Sebago in Casco, ME. And in so doing, she founded a camp. Season after season, summer after summer, decade after decade after decade, Camp Sunshine has flourished under Anna Gould’s vision, guidance and direction. Today it’s a nonprofit organization with a permanent home in a state-of-the art facility on land donated by the Goulds. Accredited by the ACA, Camp Sunshine will mark its 30th season this summer by offering thirty week-long sessions. Sessions of respite, support, joy and hope have provided a family camp experience and haven for more than 40,500 individuals since 1984. ACA New England has named Anna Gould a Camp Champion in recognition and appreciation of her efforts to provide the life-changing gift of summer camp to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families at Camp Sunshine in Casco, ME.
